Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gus Krieger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gus, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?
My first agent came from growing up in Los Angeles and having “friends of friends” connections – just remember that finding an “in” with representation is not half as important or difficult as having excellent material to showcase when the opportunity arises.
Gus, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a multifaceted Hollywood type; writing, producing, and directing for stage and screen. I found that being multidisciplinary in this way gave me a bit of an edge in championing my own projects, and has enabled me to find work in ways that being singularly focused would not.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience is the number one trait necessary to succeed in creative industries, full stop. I once wrote a television pilot that attracted the attention of an A-list actor, and we scheduled a call to discuss his involvement. About twenty minutes before the call, the actor cancelled for vague reasons and never rescheduled. It would have been a perfect time for me to dial everything back, but instead I shook it off and plowed ahead.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I always believed that “success” in this industry involved being consistently, gainfully, visibly employed in ways that eventually resulted in a lavish lifestyle. As the years progressed, I came to understand that success means little more than being satisfied with and proud of your own output, as that’s ultimately the only aspect you can control.
