Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Guga Carvalho. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Guga, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
The landscape of content creation in the film industry has undergone a profound transformation with the rise of social media. Traditionally, films relied on theatrical releases and television broadcasts to reach audiences, with a focus on long-form storytelling. However, the advent of social media has democratized content creation, allowing filmmakers to engage with audiences directly and in real time. Short-form videos, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and interactive campaigns have become integral to promoting films and connecting with fans. This shift has not only altered the promotional strategies but has also influenced storytelling itself, as filmmakers adapt to the bite-sized, shareable nature of content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, reshaping the dynamics of audience engagement in the digital age. In 2022 I created Blackbeard Productions, a production company focused on real time content. We started to work on projects for big brands such as Mercedes-Benz. In these types of projects, I had to create storytelling that the brand is going to tell on their social media pages during a live event that they are sponsoring such as Rock In Rio (Brazil), Lollapalooza, or conventions that they are participating in. And because everything is for social media, I found a way to stand out with good cinematography. I started to apply all my knowledge with cameras, angles, movements and lights to Instagram Reels, or even for a 15-second story. This type of content has become essential for brands to create a good presence on social media. In 2023 we did real-time content for Coca-Cola, Mercedes-Benz, Rock In Rio, Formula One, Volkswagen, The Town, Lollapalooza, and Meta.

Guga, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Worked in the film industry in many Movies and Music Videos in Los Angeles, Orlando, and Brazil. I’m also a pioneer and specialist in Real Time content and Social Media content, with clients such as Rock In Rio, The Town, Lollapalooza, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Coca-Cola Brazil, Corona, and Formula One.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
the most rewarding aspect of being an artist lies in the ability to evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, and create a lasting impact through the power of visual storytelling. Crafting narratives that resonate with audiences, eliciting genuine reactions, and fostering a connection between the viewer and the art is deeply gratifying. The process of translating ideas into a visual language, seeing characters come to life, and having the potential to influence perspectives on a broad scale offers a sense of fulfillment unique to the cinematic craft. Ultimately, the joy stems from the knowledge that one’s creativity has the capacity to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of those who experience the work.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For a filmmaker with prestigious clients like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, the most impactful source of new clients often stems from a combination of word-of-mouth referrals and a strong online presence. Successfully delivering high-quality work for well-known brands tends to generate positive recommendations within the industry, as satisfied clients share their experiences with colleagues and peers. Additionally, maintaining a robust portfolio showcasing the caliber of work produced for such reputable clients can serve as a powerful marketing tool. Social media platforms, industry events, and film festivals also play a pivotal role, providing opportunities to showcase skills, network with potential clients, and further establish a reputation for excellence in the field.
