Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Greyson Hoelzel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Greyson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
From the (essentially) first video I made which blew up, I knew I wanted to pursue some form of online comedy. My first post was a satirical video about being diagnosed with a micropenis and it garnered quite the attention. People seemed to really enjoy a comedic take on someone making fun of themselves so that’s what I continued to do. Slowly, over the last 4 years, people have continued to follow along and engage with my content. Since then, I have mostly just made jokes either about myself or with observations I have made throughout the day and it stuck. Any opportunity I have to make someone laugh I try to take because I truthfully think comedy and laughter are the best things in life. The feedback (mostly positive) I have received since starting my online presence has been that I bring joy and laughter into different peoples and communities lives. I have never been more greatful and humbled by the people who have engaged in my life, especially since I know I can be cringey and boring which is never a good combination.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mid-twenties stereotypical guy living in Philadelphia, PA. I am an engineer by day and on the internet, simply just a guy trying to make others laugh. I mostly post content related to making fun of myself or making jokes about things I witness.i got into content creation when I started to slowly gain more of a following online just by making jokes or doing impressions. It has slowly turned into a collective following of over 1 million people across Instagram and Tik Tok over the last four years. I am so grateful for my audience and people who choose to give me a platform. I got into content creation by just continuing to post videos and gain more of a following by being consistent with posting. I am most proud of the engagement I have because of the amazing people who continue to support and watch my content. Truthfully, I just want to entertain and make people laugh, and the people who watch have been for the most part, overwhelmingly positive about the content I post. I want people to know that I love comedy and entertaining. I want to provide those on the internet with a creative and comedic space where they can hopefully find a source of joy from someone’s content. I do my best to make funny videos, although recently I have begun to do lifestyle. Thankfully are responding just as positively to the lifestyle as they did to the comedy. My type of comedy is typically making myself the butt of a joke or impressions.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to continue comedy and potentially pursue either a career in stand up or comedic acting. I love rom coms with every ounce of my being and would love to star in a cheesy rom com as I feel like that best represents me as a person. I have written some stand up material but I can ensure that it is all hot garbage. I don’t have the confidence yet to bomb in front of a crowd so until then I will hope for opportunities in acting. I also love sketch comedy, so any sort of chance to get plugged into improv or sketch comedy I am willing to take.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Honestly by being consistent and not taking myself too seriously I’ve been able to continuously grow my audience across social media. I think understanding which content your audience most enjoys and continuing to post that style of content is the best way to grow a platform then you can transition into other styles of content once your audience is engaged enough in who you are as a person. My advice is to stay true to who you are and ignore those who are putting you down.
