We were lucky to catch up with Gretchen Norman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gretchen, thanks for joining us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
We donate the profit of our sales from our cookie decorating kits to No Kid Hungry. Being a mom, I don’t want to see any kids go without meals. Nutrition is so important to growing up healthy. Meal insecurity is also something children shouldn’t have to worry about. If kids have good meals all the time they can focus on being kids as well as being able to focus in school. If kids can do those things that will make the world a better place.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a little girl, I always loved to bake. My grandmother always took the time to bake when I would go visit her. When I was in high school my dad mentioned that there is a job called a pastry chef and from there on out that is what I wanted to be. This was the early days of Food Network so there wasn’t all of the show about cakes like there are now. I found Johnson and Wales through a magazine and took a tour of the school and thought it was fabulous! It was wonderful learning about all of the different aspects of baking and pastry. After earning my degree I worked in the pastry kitchen at Chateau Elan and learned so much there as well. During that time I became a mom and left the business for a while to focus on my family. After a while, I got the itch to get back into the business. P.S. Sweets was born out of wanting to provide for my family but have the flexibility of working for myself. However, the cherry on top of making cookies, cupcakes, and macarons is seeing the joy on my client’s faces when they receive their treats! We love working with our clients to create the sweets of their dreams.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth has been a great source of clients but also working with local event planners has been wonderful too. Their clients will hire them for a special event and they will continue to use P.S.Sweets for other special occasions.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Working on new projects every week keeps my creative brain happy. Every order is different some might be very similar but there is always a tweak to be made here or there, like changing colors. Mixing food colors to achieve the right color can at times can be a challenge and when you get it right it is a nice feeling of achievement. The ultimate reward though is seeing a smile on their face and when they return for more sweets!
