Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gregory Shaffer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gregory, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Corporate America for the most part disregards the need for adequate security. Although “Cyber Security” is a fairly new threat and is often addressed, “Physical Security” for their building, space, warehouse, and their people often go unaddressed. Security measures are usually the first item cut when budgets need to be reduced. The reason, it is difficult to show the “Return on Investment” for security. For instance, if you have a great security plan and procedures, and nothing happens to stop production, no employees were injured, no losses reported, the average accountant looks at that as normal operations, and not a result of good security.
The other common mistake made in the corporate world as it relates to security is, “When it comes to security, you get what you pay for!” Most firms hire the cheapest security contract presented to them. This is usually a colossal mistake which ultimately costs the company more due to the security failure.

Gregory, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

We view every client and every request as a means to improving global security.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Delivering more than what is expected! In conducting security operations, you often have to act not only as a security element, but also as a concierge, chauffeur, and guide. Delivering to the client more than expected is essential in having the client refer business to you. This can be done with how you prepare for the job, from what you carry with you, to what is in the vehicle, to your how you dress.
At Shaffer Security Group (SSG) we dress in business suits that are the latest styles. Unlike many security firms, black suits and black ties are forbidden. Highly shined, leather shoes are mandatory. Tattoos must be hidden from view. Facial hair is not allowed. And, our greatest weapon is our mind, not our firearms.
Providing for the client’s needs before they even know what they want is the key. Even the smallest gestures can set you apart. For instance, when providing security for a nationally recognized individual always have a Sharpie pen with you and available for when your client needs to sign an autograph. Handing your client the pen while they are searching their own pockets for one, is a small gesture that goes a long way.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Starting SSG after a 20-year career in the FBI and 11-years in the United States Coast Guard I had developed an extensive “rolodex” of security professionals across the globe. Utilizing those contacts and asking them for referrals is exactly how I built my client base. Most people enjoy helping other people; all you have to do is “ask”.
