We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gregory Rubin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gregory , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
The one thing that my parents did right was to make sure I had a spiritual relationship with God. Life will throw things at you that no man can help you with. Only God will be able to get you through things like that. They taught me about having integrity and good character. Your reportation could make or break your progress. That also taught me to lead by example, never ask a person to do something that you wouldn’t do; and to work hard and be consistent, and to trust the process. Nothing happens over night.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Native Memphian. I graduated from White Station High School and I am currently a student athlete at The University of Memphis (Senior). I play Defensive Back for the Memphis Tiger Football team. To be a success at anything, you have to be very focus, discipline, and be able to prioritize life. It has been said many times that success comes with a sacrifice. But you have to believe that, what you are sacrificing is worth it in the end. Out side of school and football, I am currently still working in the development phase of my clothing brand, GMI (Get Money Incorporated). You can follow us on Instagram at getmoneyinc._ . I’m really not sure what sets me apart from others. But what I do know is that God made me different, I really can’t explain it. It’s more like a feeling or an aura or something. The one thing that I am most proud of is making my parents and family proud of me. My family support is everything to me. Without their guidance, prayers, and support, I’m really not sure how far I would have made it, even though I still have a long way to go. The main thing I want people to know about me is that I am a hard working , disciplined, dedicated, motivated, individual child of God.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I would, without a shadow of doubt choose the same sport/profession.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When Covid hit, I was finishing my junior year of high school. During the summer going into my senior year we got news that school will be closed for the up coming year. All sports and school activities had been cancelled so I was not able to play football my senior year. I was devastated! My 7v7 team had to cancell all of our games and college school visit had come to an end because of the pandemic. I was hoping to visit more colleges and receive more scholarships for football. I wanted to play ball so bad, I asked my parents if I could move to Savannah, GA with my aunt to play because I heard that the schools in Gorgia was still open. My parents said no because I already had scholarship offers and I needed to use that break for training and conditioning. Every time I heard about a school being open, I would ask my parents if I could go to that school and they told me no every time I asked. So one day, I told my mom I could go to Memphis early and play ball, I would. So my mom called my high school and asked them if it was possible and they told her yes. I had all of my major credits I needed for high school, but I had to take two additional class to transition to college early. So my parents enrolled me in an online school and it was done. Off to The Universty of Memphis Football Spring Camp. This was the best pivot ever! Leaving high school early to play football. My High School Senior year was playing Football for The Memphis Tigers.
