We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gregory Rashton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gregory below.
Gregory, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I actually have two. One project I wrote is called GJR: Road to Redemption that speaks about the ups and downs in my relationship with my father. I think that’s my most meaningful project because it helped us in a way bridge a gap that in our relationship. It also helped break a generational curse because of his relationship with his father. My other project titled Mental State speaks about how important mental health and my struggles with depression. It started a much needed conversation with people who are close to me.
Gregory, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. I’ve been writing poetry since I was 12. What got me into the industry was the love and support of my family and friends. I’ve always been shy so I never thought I would be a performer. When I decided to be a performer I wanted to make sure my art would mean something. Whenever you hear a poem or song created from me I want you to feel something. When you listen to an entire project I want you learn something. I also wanted to make art that uplifts and inspires others. What sets me apart is I have a different message in every project and my art is made for all age groups to enjoy. I’m most proud of my growth and consistency. From performing in coffee shops to performing on big stages. And this is only the beginning for me.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think my everyday life is my story of resilience. I’ve had a constant battle with depression since I was a child. It can be hard at times to create the way I do. I have this constant voice that comes to destroy me, but I continue to remind myself that I am the son of a king and I can’t be defeated. I know what I want to achieve with my art and I know how much of an impact it will make.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to simply put more positive vibes into the world. Create art that speaks of everything that I’m truly passionate about whether I’m speaking about my family, depression, domestic violence, my other struggles, etc. I want to inspire others to embrace who they truly are and not hide behind a persona.
