We recently connected with Gregory Crowson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gregory, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Photography was never an interest of mine to be honest. Back in 2017 I picked up a friends camera to help take pictures and video for creatives in the area I was living in. I had no prior knowledge so I wanted to take it serious and learn as much as I could.
From day one, myself and another creative (Rey Morado) came up with the idea for Camnimbus, an Atlanta based media company providing high quality photography and videography. Everyday after we came up with the idea, I’d offer to shoot events for free or use social media to offer free shoots. That was the blueprint for me getting any recognition.
Knowing what I know now I don’t think there is anything I needed to hurry the process. I’m where I need to be, at the time needed to be it.
My people skills are most essential in this field though! I’m a pretty quiet individual so photography does push me out of my comfort zone when working with models, but that’s only helped me grow as a person.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Greg Crowson. I’m a photographer based out of Atlanta. It all started for me in Statesboro, GA however. I had no intentions of taking it serious but while the opportunity presented itself, I went for it. My friends that I made music with in college needed visual content back in 2017. I offered having had some knowledge of a camera and began doing it everyday. I didn’t see it as what it is now but I’ve come along way since we’ve last spoke. For a few years I would just do shoots whenever they would be presented, getting paid here and there. It wasn’t until the second half of 2020 that I viewed it as something I could support myself off of. The beginning of 2020 was tough. I lost a job due to COVID and didn’t shoot for the first few months that year. Things had really started off slow. On top of everything that was going on, I was dead broke. I wasn’t even thinking about photography at this point. Out of nowhere I get booked in Atlanta for two shoots. I was in Statesboro and had no money, so initially I thought I wouldn’t be able to make it. The week prior, I found $200 in cash right around the time I was ready to cancel my shoots. That timing couldn’t have been better and it was more than enough for me to make it to Atlanta. Anyways, those two shoots would really change everything for me. Since then I’ve been able to travel the world and experience things I couldn’t imagine, all behind this camera!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’ve never really been into social media how most would be. I have found a great deal of success through word of mouth. I started taking pictures in college, (who doesn’t want their picture taken) where I would use my network to build a portfolio. I would offer my service for free which has opened more doors for me than ever. Just being around, creating a face behind the name helped me push my social media following and once you get it, at that point it’s about maintaining your niche and adding onto it. Don’t get caught up in the numbers, it really doesn’t matter. I barely post nowadays and get booked regularly. Stay true to you!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my reputation has grown because my love for it shows. I could do this everyday and not make a dime. I allow people to just be as opposed to putting so much stress on getting “the shot”. Also, I have a 24 hour turnaround which has been key when people speak of me.
