We recently connected with Gregori Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Gregori , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Honestly, my parents did it all right! I know how that may sound but seriously they supported me from the very beginning. They’re the reason my move to Los Angeles was so smooth! Growing up I attended nothing but art schools and when I wanted to switch it up and go to “normal school” my mom’s answer was always “no”. Looking back I appreciate her a ton for not letting me transfer and sticking to the arts. My sister put me into dancing but once I started to take a liking to it she gladly handed over the responsibility to my parents, lol. Then once I got to high school (Northwest School of the Arts) I started to show interest in film photography, which opened up an entirely new portal of what being an artist meant to me. My parents happily supported that too, bought the supplies needed for class etc. To them if I had a plan for something and it made sense they were backing me 1000% and even then if it didn’t they were still right there cheering me on. I got a lot of what most of my artist friends did not when it came to having parents who supported a career in the arts.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Growing up I alway’s loved the camera, you would have thought that modeling was going to be it for me. I chose dance! There’s something about music and the way it makes you feel! It’s amazing how such a masterpiece can be created when you put the two together. Dance and performing will always be my first love, but I now like to place myself under the artist umbrella. It all goes deeper than the surface of any subcategory. I enjoy working on my vocals, taking photographs, editing videos and learning the newest tiktok dances. All of these things created a door for me to walk through the moment I knew that I would be good at creating any type of content. I just had to trust myself. After taking film photography, I really formed an eye for what was actually being captured through a lens and what would come out of developing what had been captured. Especially photographs taken on a phone. A phone has to be positioned a certain way, if there was a vision for a picture that I wanted, I had to explain it JUST right or give the phone to someone I could trust. Once I took a leap of faith and moved out to L.A to continue chasing my dance dreams I was meet with so many places to create! From dance videos to capturing myself on a fun night out, the attention to my instagram started to boom!! My photos were getting responses and my professional dance videos were bringing in all of the likes.
Then one day I started to pay attention to my analytics so that I could post at the right times to keep my engagement active. I started to prep my captions so that I was always ready. I really started to see the growth and I loved it! Then one day I thought to myself, “I should really start taking this more seriously and create content”. I had been told plenty of times to start a Youtube channel but let’s be real in this day in time it is easier to create an IG reel over a YT video! (I did start a channel though.) Now I find my love for coffee, traveling, and dancing all coming together to turn my content into what it is today!
How did you build your audience on social media?
For me, it all started in college! I’d say that between summers in Charlotte and my last semester at UNCG my post’s really started to see some major love! After graduation I knew that I wanted to change my profile to business due to graduating with a B.F.A in dance and moving to Los Angeles soon after. Once I planted myself in LA and began posting my dance videos , my following really started to grow. I mean I was training at one of the top dance studios known to any and all dancers from all over. Then there were the photo’s that I would post in between, showcasing the life that I was living in the “City of Angels”, and that really helped the interactions to start booming.
My advice to those just starting out would be to stay consistent, engage with your audience, and never doubt yourself!!! Your follower count does not matter, how you engage with your audience and how real you are with them and yourself is KEY!!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative for me would definitely be the conversations had with my following. Especially if they try a coffee recipe that I have posted because that’s what I want! I want people to try it and give me their feedback. I love creating the videos but the feedback is what gets me smiling the most. It truly makes me feel warm inside. And when it comes to my artistry behind the scenes or in front of the camera, the most rewarding would have to be how I make people feel when they watch me in action. When it’s all over and the cameras are put away, the compliments soon come after is what keeps me going. It is a huge part of why I do what I do and continue to! Any form of art is powerful and it has a huge impact on how people move through their everyday lives.
