We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gregor Purgaj a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gregor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I guess creating has always been in me. Even as a child, I was very attracted and happy to create something with my bare hands … with what you have at hand. So the desire for more was natural. Probably from a young age, I have always associated the process of acquiring some knowledge or skill with the fact that you tackle things without fear that you might fail. You learn to be patient and thoughtful from mistakes. This means I don’t rush or push for more. To put it cliché I go with the flow, which has always led me somewhere. I think that I have this attitude towards it so that I can keep myself, and not lose my mind. At the end of the day, you realize that you are your own biggest obstacle.

Gregor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
First and foremost, I am a painter who does paintings, designs and layouts for various exhibitions in galleries and museums, poster design, beer and vine labels, illustration, music videos, photography.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Attend exhibitions, go to openings, communicate with the artist and other visitor’s. Don’t be afraid to ask about the work and if you are really interest in an art piece that spoke to you, don’t be afraid to ask for the price. These days you can find really god and quality artwork from a young starting artist for a normal price. You know how they say … support the local.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to gain more knowledge. The fact that you can create something and learn something new in the process of making is the biggest driver for me, because it is usually at that moment that some new door opens, with new knowledge and more possibilities.
