We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gregg Sharp. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gregg below.
Gregg, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you have any advice regarding quality control and maintaining quality as your brand grows?
I run all of my endeavors with the simple principal shared with me a long time ago.. “You get 100% of what you inspect, never of what you expect. And in that simple phrase it has summed up the secret to my success perfectly!
If you think about the phrase and deconstruct it for a moment you have two terms of action
Physical – To Inspect
Emotional – To expect
Many business owners set all the wrong parameters and goals for their company and that is why they fail. By setting expectations one is simply creating a reality or narrative that only lives in their own inner self. But if they changed that action to a physical construct as in to Inspect then they would be able to drive success by creating accountability and weeding out those who do not share the same common goal or work principles.
Gregg, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I like to consider myself a Cereal Entrepeneur! That is right – Cereal Entrepeneur!
The reason I say that is because I learned how to read, comprehend, strategize, memorize, adapt, negotiate, demand, retreat, and live life from the age of 3-18 all while eating my bowl of cereal in the morning. As child growing up with four brothers if you wanted to read the newspaper in the morning, I had to be up first so that I could have possession and also quiet to read it. Then I could be first to the bathroom, first to the shower, first out the door if it was time for school and have the most time to make my plans for the day.
Today in the world of entertainment as a business owner, I use the cereal approach in my everyday work ethic. I get up before my peers (no one is competition to me; I compete to be a better me and look to encourage those running the race with me) I use that time to pre plan my day and set a path for success that I continually inspect on a constant basis!
My clients expect the best of me. The only way I can provide them that service is to be ready!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
If you look at the true definition of resilience, you find that it is – “the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness”.
Successful businesspeople are resilient every day! If my day does not offer me the ability to think, react, overcome and strategize then I find that my day is not complete. If everything is going right in business the lesson that you are learning is that you are not inspecting enough and to look harder. Successful people never end their day feeling fulfilled, they end their day feeling that they left something on the table and that they need to do better tomorrow.!
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
In 30 years of being in the business world I have bought many businesses that I have restructured and sold at a profit. To illustrate one might be tough in a limited space so I would rather share with you a few simple rules of thumb:
1. Businesses are only worth what you are willing to spend. Never agree to more than the comfortable foreseeable return amount that you have assessed the business for. You are not buying a business based on its potential, you are buying a business based on your potential. If you feel strongly on where you can take it never pay for more than that amount.
2. People are selling to leave not stay in. There is always a reason for departure… remember to not listen to the seller’s reason why their business is great and worth what they are asking, if it was that good, they would not be selling.
3. Always establish your own exit strategy before buying. If you cannot envision yourself selling for a profit on a reasonable timeline then that business is not right for you.
