We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gregg Lambton-carr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gregg below.
Gregg, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I was never educated in USA, but i have had a lot of interns from a variety of colleges.
Very few actually prepare them for the working life of a photographer.
This leads a lot of them to have massive school debt, but they never end up working in the industry.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am South African, i started my photography career as an underwater and wildlife photographer.
Having moved to the USA, i am now more of a fashion and portrait photographer mainly.
I have been published in multiple magazines and have had a few shows as well.
I do shoot underwater fashion, which is challenging but creative.
Every shoot is a challenge that involves a lot of problem solving, everything from clients being uncomfortable in front of the camera, to the worst weather on shoot days.
That is what makes a good photographer i think, the ability to not only create, but to problem solve and keep the clients happy.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The best resource i have found is community.
Find others in your area who are willing to help, to talk to, to advise.
Mentorship is one of the most overlooked resource that i find.
For new photographers, find people in your area that do the same as what you want to do, reach out to them.
Many will reject you, but there will always be some willing to help.
There are also usually meetups and clubs that will help you advance.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
In this industry it is really difficult to get clients, especially in today’s world of everyone carrying a camera phone.
The best way still is word of mouth. So being professional at what you do is the best marketing tool you can have.
Sadly social media is a massive marketing tool nowadays, so again, keep that clean and professional.
The magazine industry is really battling now, but sending samples of your work on a continius basis is very important.
