Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Greg Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Greg, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
My love of performance came from my father—a performer in his own right. Born and raised in Chico, CA, as a child I grew up on stage, in rehearsal spaces and production studios. Here, I would lean over the shoulders of producers, engineers and songwriters to learn from them and perfect my production and songwriting style. As a teen, I released my first album which I produced and recorded myself in the early 2000s.
My first big-break came ahead of my high school graduation where I was asked to tour with the R&B K-Ci & JoJo and I was featured artist on The Platters Motown Review tour. Shortly after, I moved to San Francisco where I jumped into the Bay Area music scene performing with the likes of Tower of Power, Lenny Williams and Narda Michael Walden (Maria Carey/Whitney Houston). Also, I was mentored by the late Roberta Flack. Flack compared me to the legendary Donny Hathaway and flew me out to sing for her music school for underprivileged youth based in NYC.
Most recently I appeared and won S2E8 of NBC’s Songland where my song “Miracle” was chosen for pop recording artist Bebe Rexha and was used as the theme of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games; alongside co-writer/producer Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic.
My music is currently being featured in feature films and on CBS, FOX (Call Me Kat), NBC, Netflix (YOU, Love is Blind, The Ultimatum, Queer Eye) VH1 (Black Ink Crew) MTV (Teen Mom) and many more TV shows and commercials around the world.
My Live performances include. NBC Today in Nashville, Ryan Seacrest Studios, Featured on tour with artists K-Ci & JoJo and The Platters Motown Review Tour. Also performed with: Ryan Tedder, Taylor Hicks, Tower Of Power, En Vogue, Lenny Williams and Narada Michael Walden.
Currently, I live in Los Angeles California. Now producing and writing music with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, Sandy Vee (Katy Perry) and Rob Kleiner (Sia).

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a writer for me is how even one song, one message can change someones life. I write a lot about struggle and over coming obstacles. I love giving strength to those who need it. Even just that little push to get them though. I’ve had a keep pushing myself throughout my whole career and still do. It’s not easy supporting a family in the music business. The ups and downs alone can make you go crazy. It’s about staying as cool and as in the middle as possible!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I perform 3 to 5 nights a week and when the pandemic happen the world shut down. As a perform there’s no “Sick pay”. My in come literally STOPPED over night and I was forced to think of other ways to keep the bills paid and food on the table for my kids. I turned up all the skills I learned over the years. I was engineering/mixing projects for other artists. Setup virtual shows from my studio. I started writing and recording songs for companies like Songfinch (custom songs). I even performed a song over zoom for someones first dance live at they’re wedding. I was making videos promoting companies like Breathwork helping people cope with anxiety.
That’s why when I hear people say, “I don’t want to learn how to record, edit video, mix etc. I just wanna be a singer”. I say good luck with that. With this world we live in we as artists need to have our hands in EVERYTHING!
