We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Greg Olin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Greg below.
Greg , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Meaningful projects are the epitome of being a creative artist. being creative to me is not meant to feel like “work”. Our band WESLYNN has provided that opportunity to us for nearly a decade. Even when we had signed our first record deal, we made sure that we would still own the creative freedom to put out what we wanted to. A lot of times you hear music artists being pushed & pulled to follow a release or a trend of current chart-topping music, that is something we have always been cautious of.
Music is something deep to all 3 of us, we are certainly inspired by certain genres & trends, however, we always make an effort to put out what makes us feel something. Our music comes from our real-life experiences & emotions, by putting a “cookie-cutter” template on top of that would take away the artistry in my mind.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Greg Olin, I play guitar & produce music for the band WESLYNN (Phoenix, Arizona). We have been a band since late 2013 and have had some very exciting highs & lows! I am most proud of the fact that we have stood the test of time, as 3 individuals,’ life has thrown so much at us. We have overcome a lot of trials and tribulations, both in business & personally that have brought us closer and made us stronger.
We have tasted success and have had some frustrations as do all creatives & business owners. The one constant that through it all is that we plan to keep WESLYNN forever. We may take some time away from writing & recording but WESLYNN is something that all 3 of us will hold on to forever just like our friendship.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is that I can create something brand new. There are no rules when it comes to music, there might be “standards” but if I want to do something unique it is total freedom. The other aspect that is special is that I am in a band with my 2 best friends, it is hard to call it work when I get to be creative and be around Jared (vocals) & Kevin (drums). We bounce ideas off of each other and have made the creative process fun.
Have you ever had to pivot?
We have had to pivot more than a few times in the last decade of making music. I think the fact that social media is always evolving keeps us on our toes. We need to stay on the cusp of what is the “trend” and find ways to make it exciting; the same goes for our music. We try to innovate and evolve our sound every time we begin writing our next release.
