We recently connected with Greg Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Greg, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a child I was never the favored grand child, nephew, or cousin. I was small, ignored, abused, but wise beyond my years. I am blessed to think differently and outside of my circumstances. Noticing those around me and the lifestyle they was living was something i did not want to duplicate. I realized in middle school I had a mindset of an entrepreneur and had no idea what that was. I just knew I did not have the same thinking of my peers. Ultimately, besides dreaming of a mission to service as many people as possible, I want to build a path my children would want to travel.
Greg, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a businessman but did not know how to achieve that. I passionately did for others and received a heartwarming feeling doing it. Service to Others kind of thing. As a kid, my favorite game to play was Monopoly. I often had to play by myself because people wouldn’t play with me because I would end up owning the entire board. Getting involved with Real Estate was more than making money. It was a way I could control my own career, be my own boss, service as many people as possible, and make a difference in my community. As a Real Estate agent, I bring an
abundance of skills and experience to the profession. My background in sales allows me to a be quick thinker, problem solver, a strong negotiator, a great communicator, and an effective listener. I got involved with Real Estate because I was fed up with corporate America and having a boss who was intimidated by my abilities. I was let go from 3 jobs, not because of performance, but because of the color of my skin. After the last one, enough as enough. That following weekend, I met some people who were agents, asked questions about their career, went to my Circle of friends and family, asked about their opinion if I would be a good fit for the industry, prayed about it, enrolled in the class, passed the test, and hit the ground running with no looking back.
I am most proud of the heart I lead with in my transactions. Its not about the money. Its about the people I am servicing. I LOVE the feeling of helping others dreams come true. I LOVE the smiles on the faces and hugs I receive from my clients after a smooth experience. I also LOVE relationships that are built and continued after the sale.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have never been given anything. Ever since I was in High School, people would always say they would help me with things but no one has ever stepped up. I realized that if I am going to build anything for myself, I will need to JUST DO IT and not wait on others. In 2009, I was hired by a company here in Kansas City. On the first day, I noticed there was 7 others who started on the same day ( I was the only minority). The manager came in, did orientation, gave us laptops, and handed out accounts to service to everyone but me. He looked at me and said, ” you will need to build your own territory” and walked out. I had no idea on what to do or how. While The others left the room with excitement and went to work. They projected me to establish 3 accounts in that year on my own, while others was given 30+ accounts each on day one. Immediately, I tapped into an ability I did not know I had, Business Developer. Out of 82 Territory Managers in the this company, I was the only minority. I was not going to allow that to stop me from being Greg Miller. I went out, knocked on doors, built relationships, and successfully built my territory of 43 accounts in 6 months by myself. Within a year I climbed my into the Top 10% of the company in sales by being resilient. Not allowing my circumstances to be my outcome. I was fully determined and motivated to defy the odds placed in front of me. That is the type of chip I carry on my shoulders and pushes me everyday to succeed.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Getting involved in Real Estate was a MAJOR pivot. After I filed a discrimination suit, I accepted a job in the car industry as a Finance Manager. Having an extensive background in that field it was an easy transition but difficult on the kids. I could no longer spend the amount of time with them they were accustom to. The Finance Manager was such an easy move, I instantly excelled. Maximizing the pay plans and getting paid a lot of money, in this case it was about the money and not the career or the people. After 3-4 months, the Dealership owner felt he was paying me too much money, my pay plan got changed without out my acknowledgement. My monthly income fell from $13000 to $5000. I did not believe making $5000 a month at a car dealership was worth missing out on my children growth and sports. Coincidentally, that is when I met those people who were involved in Real Estate. That is where my Pivot took place. From that moment on, I was fully committed and motived to take full control of my career.
