We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Greg Kuchan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Greg thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I am answering this question currently on vacation. So yes…and no, not like you think. My industry is very much based on momentum. When I am in a flow, I am more productive and new business opportunities present them more consistently. This trip to Michigan, I am surrounded by forrest, birds chirping and situated right on the coast of Lake Michigan. I am out of the daily activities of running my business, so I have the opportunity to work on improving my business. Build upon the systems and processes I already have and build new ones where I find improvement is necessary. Working for 2-3 hours a day on a trip like this is enough balance to enjoy my day and time off and help improve my business when I get back home. As an entrepreneur and competitive I tend to push myself very hard and expect more out of myself than most. Which also means vacations as well. When I take time completely off, I am off the grid and have been thinking/planning the trip for months or years. When I return I am refreshed.
I am able to accomplish my vacations and build my business because I am apart of a team. While i am out of the office, I have a full support staff and colleagues to assist my clients without a missed step of high quality service.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I got into real estate by accident. My mom was looking at investing in a rental property in San Diego while living in Wisconsin. I was her eyes on the ground and future property manager. So I went through my first purchase through the lens of an investment property. I was bouncing around jobs not satisfied with what I was doing and figured let’s give this a shot. 7 years later I am still here. Looking to learn and improve everyday!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My passions and hobbies; surfing, rock climbing, running, sailing and any adrenaline sport my friends are interested in. If you have met me you already know that I am very social. I’ll walk into a full room and come out with 10 new friends. I spend as much time as my business allows me in the activities that bring me the most joy. You cant fake passion and persistence. I am consistent in my presence in these activities and I see the same people over and over. Eventually they ask what I do for a living. I focus on systems, process and data. So when we talk about the San Diego Real Estate market I am able to approach the conversation where the other person wants to learn and I provide what I know and resources for them to educate themselves as well. When you provide so much value, its hard to go somewhere else for my services.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Consistently posting things I would want to see. I think most people have forgotten that SOCIAl is the first word of social media. Can you market in Social Media, yes, but should you be posting non stop market data and real estate content. No! I get bored and I wouldn’t want to follow me. Is my strategy the best…maybe not. I find anything in life if you want success you have to be consistent. So do what you can consistently perform on and eventually you will see success. Also get a coach/mentor!
