We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Greg Chinn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Greg thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
The Local Brand Co. is my design studio located in Laurel Canyon, producing upbeat visual language for various clients. Originally from Hawaii, I grew up surfing and then followed my dream of graduating from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. I previously worked in-and-around the Greater Los Angeles area for corporate/entertainment/retail fashion design companies. I had previously run my own design business back east as well as having a design partnership upon my return to LA.
When I conceived The Local Brand Co’s mission/vibe, the goal was to reflect having been raised in Hawaii as well as my love of vintage-inspired West Coast modernism graphics. The work comes from a personal place of integrating the influences of where I’ve lived/worked, people I’ve met and cultural/academic influences I’ve valued.
Greg, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Local Brand Co’s visual aesthetic has a vintage California Cool vibe, channeling West Coast Modernism. Inspired by surfing, a relaxed Swiss Style, handcrafted looks, eclecticism, Chet Baker/The Beach Boys/Joni Mitchell, the Case Study House program and my neighborhood of Laurel Canyon…my company was born.
I’ve always been drawn to telling a visual story. As I’ve gained experience, I’ve become adept at telling my personal story as well as that of my clients – each tale unique to their companies.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
With the world being at a very challenging time, my mission is to help clients meet their business goals in a creative way. Having them stand out in each of their respective markets. My priority is working with clients who offer education, joy, or nurturing in their own way.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would have loved to travel more. Having gotten older and seen a bit more of the world, there are experiences that you just can’t have without truly seeing/tasting/touching it.
