We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Grant Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Grant, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I moved to NASHVILLE to pursue a music career as a singer. I wasn’t necessarily that interested in performing country music but I just loved the city so much that I decided this is where I would call my new home. I worked in the service industry to pay bills and it was the best move ever. A large majority of the creatives in Nashville work as servers and bartenders just like in many other cities. After many many failures as a singer I had all but given up on my dream of being a performer until I went to my first music festival, Hangout music fest in Orange Beach, Alabama. When I walked in I was enamored. The first artist I saw was Alison Wonderland, an electronic music artist and DJ. I literally was blown away. I turned to my friends and told them I was going to do that someday. Several years later I noticed a trend in NASHVILLE where many new bars and clubs were opening up and hiring djs as well as bands. I knew this was the time to get involved. I finally got the chance to audition at Whiskey Row, a concept based out of Scottsdale. On the weekends they have live music on the first floor and djs on the club level and rooftop. They had bottle service, vip booths, club lighting and the whole nine yards. Two weeks after my audition they called me and offered me Monday nights on the roof. Shortly after that they offered me Monday through Thursday on the roof and I was able to completely devote my entire schedule to djing. Now I’ve been djing in NASHVILLE for 6 years going strong with residencies at all the top venues. I’ve played at big festivals such as Hangout Fest, Goldrush and other music festivals. I’ve opened for Nelly in Vegas, played the Indy 500, and released my own original music. Sometimes I wish I would’ve just become a Dj back in college or even earlier to expedite the process but if I’m being honest, all these experiences and knowledge I’ve gained leading to this point have added to my success so I wouldn’t change a thing!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into Djing because I love music. Music of all kinds. As an electronic music artist there’s literally no constraint on what music you want to create and put out into the world. I’m proud to be one of the top djs in Nashville and the greater south. I must clarify I’m far from being a country music dj. In fact I play a mostly open format as a performer. You go to Las Vegas or Miami? I would fit right in. I have an uncanny ability to connect with my audience and when I play a venue I give all walks of life something they can enjoy. As an artist I try to apply the same open format to my music. House music, trap music, Latin music and hip hop. It doesn’t matter to me what genre it is if I feel something from the song.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think nfts are the future. They will put money back in the pocket of artists and out of the hands of big corporations. They’ll also be great against combatting ticket scalpers and allow fans to see the artists they want to see for more affordable prices.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal as an artist is to honestly perform for as many people as possible with music that raises the collective consciousness and vibrational frequency of my listeners. I also co-founded a dog rescue that I would love to see grow into something where I can save as many rescue animals as I can.
