We were lucky to catch up with Grant Brett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Grant, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember being about 7 years old and watching the first season of American Idol and knowing that’s exactly what I wanted to do.
One of the contestants, Ryan Starr was so cool to me. She owned the stage. Shortly after the season ended I got a karaoke machine and I couldn’t stop singing. I would sing and perform Britney Spears to anyone who would listen.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Portland’s very own LGBTQIA chill wave pop singer. Although I do dabble in electro pop music, my primary genre is chill wave. My most recent EP “Here With You” is filled with sexy slow jams.
I feel very lucky to live in Portland. As a queer artist I know that it can be hard to get your foot in the door, or be taken seriously by your peers. I think that for the most part people in the music scene here are very accepting.
Although my lyrics primarily talk about love, sex and relationships, I think for the people who follow me on social media (@GrantBrettMusic) you can see that I am goofy and that I love to spend time with my amazing group of friends.
I can’t pick a favorite song that I have released, but I am most proud of my recent EP “Here With You” this entire EP was about a now ex boyfriend. This was the first time that I fully let my walls down lyrically. I think as I continue to release music, I’m really growing with each release.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am obviously not a social media expert in any way, but I see a lot of artist only posting about their music/art. I believe to really get people to care about your work you have to show the world who you are as a person too. I post pictures and videos to promote my music just like any other artist, but I also post all the dumb stuff my friends and I do as well.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love being able to share my music with the world. I am not a superstar (yet) but I love hearing positive feedback from the people who do support me. I also have loved the friendships I have made along the way.
