We were lucky to catch up with Granny Wowzers recently and have shared our conversation below.

Granny , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?

Since I learned how to write , I have been writing stories and poems . I never thought I could actually make money from it . So it was always a hobby not an income . Same with music I always loved and daydreamed about being a radio personality. Even use to make my own music playlist and mix tapes . Back when it was still on cassettes . Then learning to burn CD’S, was a whole game changer . Funny that in my late 40’s , I would be known for both writing and radio . What a huge difference from hobbies and daydreams .

Granny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

I am Granny Wowzers , a mother of 5 and grandmother of 4 . A single mother more than half my life . Struggling to take care of basic needs of my children. Going homeless a few times , yet never giving up . Life has knocked me around more times than I can count. However I never stayed down . As technology changed , I learned to quickly adapt to it . Technology actually helped me a lot and got me to where I am today . Social media apps during the pandemic helped me find my voice as well as confidence. A app called clubhouse introduced me to many people I would have never come across in life . I met a renowned poet , and actor , Michael Guinn . Who not only encouraged my poetry, but he also allowed me to be published in one of his chapter books . Turning me into a published poet .Which lead me to also publish my poetry on all music platforms. On this same app I met a writing coach who is helping me with my book . Then I met a man named Marcel who I followed onto Instagram. Popped into a few of his lives . Chatted with him and made him laugh . This man told me he’s been in Radio for over 30 years and was building his own app and station . I became a beta tester, for his apps . Then he asked me if I would like to host my own radio show . At first I was nervous but definitely excited. He showed me a few tricks gave me what I needed equipment wise to stream from home . Next thing I know I was off and running. Making my own playlist of music , getting people to interview. Recording radio broadcasts and learning how to promote. Now I make commercials, promo videos , have a scheduled interviews, people submit their music to my email . It’s been two years into Radio and I am having a blast ! Learned how to make money from commercials, still learning other monetizations . I am working outta of my living room , freedom of work from home and around my 8 yr old sons needs . It is extremely satisfying to be able to help people be heard , to help small business grow, allowing new artists get played, as well as shining a light on amazing stories. I have covered protests. as well as giving Autistic individuals a safe place to be highlighted. The pandemic was the best thing to ever happen to me because of the isolation that lead others and myself to social media . I have met some celebrities in my life , but not like I have since social media . Plus they actually know my name. Radio has given me so much , writing has given me so much . I can not be more grateful . Even though I am doing so much , I don’t want to be famous. My goal is help as many as I can be heard . Because it took so long for myself to be heard and accepted. This is a quick run through of just a part of who Granny Wowzers is . There is so much more to tell but those you will have to read my books when they come out . 1st one will be “ Where is David ? “ . A book that covers Autism , narcissism, and homelessness. How did you build your audience on social media?

First and most important thing is RESPECT. You can watch , listen and comment on a celebrity’s live streams , audio streams, or posts . Keep it respectful, clean language and don’t over push yourself. Keep the same name across social media platforms, create a email only for that name . Make that name easy , catchy and non offensive. Don’t go in asking for handouts,on anyone’s platform. Do ask relevant questions to who is speaking and topics . Be consistent on these platforms , make sure you support them genuinely. Hitting like , leaving comments, sharing their stuff . Then hosting your own spaces , find a topic you are interested in and have knowledge about . Be inviting, truthful, allow people to speak, reply to comments. Most of all be respectful and honest . This has helped my name become known as well as created a loyal audience.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect has been watching people succeed. I love knowing someone I helped grow and have success. Something as easy as playing someone’s music and sharing it on social media . Then finding out they have been signed , are winning awards , going on tour or working with other artists. Which has happened since I started radio . Or helping people simply tell their story and feeling like they have been heard . The rewards are endless when you help others . Might not be money or public recognition , fame or other things . But trust me when I say they will not forget you for believing in them and giving them their first chance to be heard .
