We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gracie Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gracie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
At SALT (Southern Automation, Logistics & Technology), we understand the Catch-22 situation faced by young job seekers who need the experience to get a job but struggle to obtain it without prior experience. This challenge often leaves them in a difficult position when entering the job market. We recognized this issue and sought to address it by taking a different approach from the industry standard.
While many companies in the industry typically rely on talent finding them through applications or seeking experienced young talent, we understand that this process can be time-consuming and resource-intensive for both the companies and the job seekers. That’s why we offer a unique apprenticeship program that aims to bridge this experience gap.
Through our apprenticeship program, we provide hands-on experience and real-world projects to our apprentices, allowing them to gain practical skills and industry knowledge while earning an income. This opportunity enables them to gain the experience sought by employers, even if they don’t have prior professional experience. By working on these projects within hiring companies, our apprentices develop the skills and knowledge necessary to kickstart their careers and build a foundation of practical skills.
For the apprentices, our program offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and development. By working on real-world projects within the hiring companies, apprentices gain valuable industry experience and exposure to the tools and technologies used in their chosen fields. Collaborating with experienced professionals, they build their network and learn from mentors who guide them through the intricacies of the industry. This immersive learning experience prepares apprentices to become well-rounded candidates who are ready to make a meaningful impact in their careers from day one.
By bridging the gap between education and employment, we bring technology and career prospects closer to home, fostering economic growth in rural areas. Our program creates a direct pathway for young job seekers to gain valuable industry experience and pursue meaningful careers. We actively collaborate with universities, schools, and local employers, ensuring that young talent can access our apprenticeship opportunities. We aim to expand these opportunities to rural areas, bringing technology and career prospects closer to home and fostering economic growth in those regions.
Our commitment to cultivating talent and expanding opportunities, coupled with our focus on diversity and community engagement, sets us apart from the industry standard. We firmly believe that effectiveness without values is a tool without purpose, which is why we prioritize creating a positive and inclusive environment for all team members. At SALT, we take pride in revolutionizing communities, unleashing potential, and empowering the next generation of innovative leaders.
In summary, the structure of our program addresses the challenge faced by young job seekers who lack experience. By bridging the gap between education and employment, we not only benefit the apprentices but also bring technology and career prospects closer to home, fostering economic growth in rural areas. Additionally, our commitment to cultivating talent, expanding opportunities, and fostering a positive and inclusive environment sets us apart from the industry standard, benefiting both apprentices and hiring companies. At SALT, we take pride in revolutionizing communities, unleashing potential, and empowering the next generation of innovative leaders.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As the Executive Director at SALT (Southern Automation, Logistics & Technology), I have a unique perspective on the program as both a former apprentice and a leader within the organization. My journey in this industry began in Fall 2020, working with InventureIT and Anagen Systems.
During my time as an apprentice, I not only developed my own skill set but also gained a deeper understanding of computer science. Prior to my involvement with SALT, I had limited exposure to technology in a high school environment. However, through the program, I discovered my passion for coding and realized my keen interest in project management within the software development lifecycle.
As a SALT apprentice, I witnessed firsthand how the program nurtures the talents and aspirations of apprentices. Recognizing my inclination toward project management, I focused my efforts on becoming a Scrum Master/Project Manager within the apprenticeship.
Upon completing the program, I transitioned seamlessly into the role of Executive Director at SALT, leveraging my knowledge and experience to contribute to the development and growth of the program. Additionally, I was hired as the official Project Manager of the development program at Anagen Systems, one of SALT’s esteemed partner companies. Notably, over 70% of Anagen Systems’ Development team consists of SALT alumni.
One of the key aspects that sets SALT apart is the comprehensive experience it offers. The program provides apprentices with a direct pathway to acquiring valuable skills and fosters a supportive network and environment that cultivates lifelong friendships and connections.
My personal journey, from being an apprentice to contributing to the development and growth of the program, gives me a unique perspective. It allows me to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by college apprentices and contribute to shaping the program accordingly to address their needs effectively.
Today, I take great pride in the remarkable evolution of the SALT program. We have significantly expanded the number of apprentices, nearly tripling its size. The majority of our partner companies now have SALT apprentices integrated into their teams. Moreover, the high number of persistent applicants, surpassing the available positions by a factor of four, speaks to the program’s reputation and the value it offers.
In summary, SALT’s apprenticeship program has been transformative for both the apprentices and the companies involved. It provides young talent with unparalleled opportunities to gain hands-on experience, valuable skills, and a supportive network. I am proud to lead the growth and success of the program and to witness the positive impact it has on the lives of the apprentices and the growth of our partner companies.
Any advice for managing a team?
One of the key factors in effectively managing a team and maintaining high morale is clear communication. It’s essential to ensure that everything is consistently documented and shared with the team. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that the best changes and improvements often come from user feedback. Listening to your customers or team members and taking their input into account can lead to significant improvements. It’s important not to be defensive when receiving criticism and instead focus on understanding the underlying needs and concerns expressed.
Overall, the key is to be receptive to feedback, encourage open communication, and continuously learn and adapt as a manager. By doing so, you can create a supportive and motivated team that thrives under your leadership.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
While no specific source consistently brings in new clients, one valuable approach is attending events that align with your business. This can include start-up events, networking events, and career fairs. These gatherings provide opportunities to connect with potential clients, as well as other industry professionals who may become valuable contacts.
It’s important to remember that networking is not an exact science but rather a combination of personal connection and the ability to create a reputable brand for yourself. Being personable, approachable, and genuinely interested in others can go a long way in building relationships and generating new client opportunities.
Word of mouth is also a powerful source of new clients. Satisfied clients who have had a positive experience working with you are likely to recommend your services to others. Therefore, it’s crucial to provide exceptional service and maintain good relationships with clients to foster positive word-of-mouth referrals.
In the business world, it’s crucial to preserve strong professional relationships. The connections you build today can lead to unexpected opportunities in the future. By maintaining a professional and respectful demeanor, even in challenging situations, you foster an environment of collaboration and open doors for potential partnerships and growth.
In summary, while attending relevant events and networking can be effective in attracting new clients, word-of-mouth referrals and maintaining positive relationships are invaluable. By focusing on providing exceptional service, building a reputable brand, and nurturing connections, you can create a steady stream of new client opportunities.
