We were lucky to catch up with Gracie Hall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Gracie, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Nashville is saturated with musicians and creatives. I find that for most, words and music comes so naturally to everyone. However this idea that channeling emotions into a song or creating a sound is something that I have a difficult time articulating. For me, I find fulfillment in creating images that represent a specific sound. When I listen to music I am most drawn to music without lyrics or minimal lyrics and these sounds often come with images and colors that represent it in my head. This is how I formulate ideas for a shoot.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always knew I was into photography even before I had a camera. I grew up in Austin, Texas and I began to take my lake sunset photos very seriously. It was in high school though when I finally got my first camera and I could never put it down. My favorite type of photography was editorials but there was not really a market for that in my hometown so I just assumed photography would only be a hobby for me.
However, when I got to Nashville in 2020 I quickly discovered the need for creative photography in the music industry and I became obsessed. I work with artists and musicians for album covers and promotional work. My creative vision stems from my love for the vibrant colors and warm tones of nature as well as matching that to the sound of the artist’s music.
Adding to that, most of my inspiration comes from movie stills. With that, I love to set a scene and capture natural moments from that scene. I spend weeks looking for certain props and colors to add to the shoot in order to create my vision and storyline.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I listen to a lot of podcasts however I am extremely picky on which ones I listen to. I can only listen to ones that are sharing a story of someone’s life and bonus point if it is told in the first person. ‘This is Actually Happening’ is a podcast that allows people who have been through traumatic events or have had mental disorders to tell their stories and raise awareness of other individuals who have been through similar events. I cannot say enough good things about this podcast it is amazing and by far my favorite I’ve listened to! I find that my desire to share and listen to people’s stories and childhood backgrounds stems from my love for this podcast and similar storytelling styles.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think this is a huge influence in my ability to listen to others and really soak in what they have to say, with that I find so much fulfillment in sharing the stories of others as well. With each of my shoots I ask a series of short questions for the artist to answer and I post them on a link in my bio. Some of the questions require a little more thought while others are silly questions that allow the listener to get to know the artist better. My goal with this is to help listeners and viewers understand that people are more than just their music.
I have found that in Nashville musicians and creatives have a strong tendency to define their worth within their art and their success. I have a rule with myself that all my questions have nothing to do with music and discuss different topics that allow people to understand who the musician is as a person. My hope with this is to sharing a piece of these musicians personality and separate self worth from a tangible thing.x
