We recently connected with Grace Terrell and have shared our conversation below.
Grace, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I think the best advice I can give as a nutritionist is to remember that healing is not linear. I have many clients that struggle with their health, whether it be hormone imbalances, gut health issues, or autoimmune conditions.
These clients are usually very disciplined and will do anything to feel better. Often times despite their efforts, they feel like they’re on a rollercoaster with their symptoms. One day they’ll feel great, the next not so much.
I try to always remind them it’s all part of the process and our bodies are fluid and always changing. It’s important to not become discouraged, stay the path and your body will respond! There’s no such thing as a perfect uphill journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My company, Graceful Wellness was born out of my own struggles with my health. I dealt with gut health issues, and hormone imbalances for years before I realized there was a connection between the “perfect” diet I thought I was eating and how I was feeling.
Throughout the process of trying to improve my health naturally I learned so much about bio individuality and the impact food has on every aspect of our health. Once I saw how much not just my health, but my life improved from changing my diet I felt a responsibility to share it. I then went on to get certified to become a Holistic Nutritionist and start my wellness company.
In my practice I work with people who are dealing with gut health issues, hormone imbalances, autoimmune conditions, or people who just want to improve their overall health and break through old patterns.
I work 1:1 with clients, have a signature course, The Gut Health Guide, and a group program, The New Leaf. I teach people how their bodies work, and things that they can implement everyday that support their natural physiology. When people have a deeper understanding of how things impact them it really helps them stick to their habits.
I have a very “no bs” approach but also strongly emphasize the mind-body connection. The body is not a set of separate systems, it’s an ecosystem. When someone is experiencing health issues it’s important to take into consideration the mental and emotional state as well as the physical.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You need emotional intellegence and empathy more than anything. Our physical symptoms are so intertwined with our emotions, whether we want to admit it or not. In order to be an effective nutritionist/coach, you have to be able to encourage your clients to dig deeper in order to unravel some of the bad habits or beliefs they have.
Clients also need to feel seen and heard. Many people have been through the conventional medical system and have felt dismissed by so many medical professionals. Its important to take the time to really listen and understand what your client is going through.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think always staying authentic and sharing my personal story. There’s so much noise out there on the internet and people will say or do almost anything to garner attention. Staying true to what I believe in, not being afraid to speak out against the trends, and having a science based matter-of- fact approach has helped people trust me.
