We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Grace Parker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Grace below.
Grace, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Yes, there is so much I admire about the way my parents raised me and my siblings. They taught us to respect, honor, and share what is true. They also taught us to enjoy beautiful things, live humbly, and not worry about tomorrow.
My parents modeled what it looks like to enjoy life and family, and not take it for granted. We travelled a lot as kids and went on many adventures as a family. I watched my parents approach new cultures and experiences with humility and curiosity. I learned from a young age not to be afraid to try new things and play!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer and was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan. I find immense joy in exploring various mediums such as paint, pen & ink, and photography to create, design, and document beauty around me. Although my focus as a designer is in print and brand identity design, I’ve dabbled in various fields such as: interior design, product design, photography, illustration, web, and editorial design. If I could describe my approach in three words, they would be: playful, timeless, and thoughtful. To put it simply, I love creating beautiful things; whether it’s helping showcase a clients work and brand well, or reflecting upon natural beauty through painting. What sets me apart is my illustrative and creative approach to design. I especially love working with other creatives to come up with a brand that feels unique and true.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to make beautiful, lasting things that create the sense of joy and discovery.
Something I feel like I’m missing in my day-to-day is the act of discovery. It’s something I grew up with all around me in such a rich culture and aesthetic. Art, craft, and care in the smallest and seemingly un-important things is deeply embedded in Japanese culture. I long for that kind of attention to detail and mastery in my life and in what I observe around me. The question I often ask myself in one way or another is: “How can I care for my neighbors and the world I’m living in well by what I create?”
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was working as an in-house graphic designer I found myself day dreaming of what I would create after I would get off work, only to be too tired to actually make anything when I got off. That frustration built day after day until it was unbearable! I felt like I wasn’t being challenged creatively in the ways I was wanting, so I decided to quit and make things! Freelancing and selling art is not easy, but I am finding immense joy and freedom in this time to focus on what I want to create.
