Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Grace Garza . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Grace , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I have two daughters that are my world. Everything I do is for them. With building my company and sacrificing so much, I often think of legacy. I am really working towards building a company that not only I am proud of, but they are too. I often think that one day they will take over and put an even fresher spin of what I’ve built. My oldest is very smart with numbers and organization and my youngest has a natural eye for design and art. Then it just continues from there, generation after generation. I work with a lot of craftsmen who’s grandfathers started the business. To me, that’s true success.

Grace , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the owner of Grace Garza Design. We are a full service interior design company. We provide all types of services from custom furniture to full scale remodels and new construction. We consider ourselves a concierge service of interior design. Our relationships with our clients is our highest priority.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I went out on my own and started GG design in 2017. It truly was part of my destiny. I took my first kitchen that year and from that lead to the next. All of my jobs are word of mouth referrals. When Covid hit in March 2020. A bit of panic set in. What was I going to do? My job was to be in clients homes. No one was allowing that. I started to wonder if I should consider doing something else. By June 2020, I had a waitlist. Covid turned into the biggest blessing of my life. For the first time ever, people were home. They were stuck in their homes. They had to look at those walls all day. And guess what, they weren’t pretty. Clients were actually home living in their spaces and realizing that they weren’t as functional or pretty as they thought. I think also Covid taught us all that life is unpredictable. That maybe the time you think you have, you don’t. You have to do the things you dream of because life is short. My business has been non stop since. I’ve since hired an amazing team. I no longer run this on my own and I thank God every day because I thought I was going to lose my dream.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Since I was a little girl, I loved interior design. As a small child I would move the furniture around in my parents house until it felt good. I would ask for new bedding instead of toys. In 2001, I started attending Harrington Institute of interior design in Chicago. That year I met a boy who I started dating and three years later married. David and I were meant to be. He loved construction and design as well. We were young and had to pay the bills so we always worked for others. I’m 2015, we said no more. He got his General Contractors license and we made a plan. We work together on most jobs, but not always. He is my partner in life and my business. We keep each other going and pushing to the next goal. Most of my clients don’t have a contractor, so I tend to bring him in. I think there is a real comfort with that. We keep each other accountable and the clients enjoy working with the two of us as a team.
