We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Grace Dowling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Grace below.
Hi Grace, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
So I knew I wanted something cute and original, but that it needed to include my name (Grace) and be memorable. I didn’t want just something boring and typical for a name like Grace photography or timeless pixels. That’s so cliche to me. So at first I started with give a little Grace photography and that was a little too long but it was exactly in the ball park of what I wanted creativity wise. That’s when I gradually started leaning towards it being shorted to A Little Grace Photography. And as one previous client said “we could always use a little Grace in our lives.”
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first got started in photography when my mom, who was constantly trying to get her rambunctious kids out of the house during summer break, decided to enroll me in a summer photo course at the local career tech center. After that I fell in love with the camera. I got a camera for a couple of Christmases and that kept spurring me on to do better. Fast forward to graduation of high school and I know I want to go to college for something artistic but I’m worried photography wouldn’t make me money. So as I go to community college for the basics I work at the school newspaper and that’s where I learn about photojournalism. Which I have always been good at English in school and I enjoyed writing, so I applied for a couple of different colleges try that had degrees I was interested in after applying I started praying that at least one of the colleges I applied to I could afford. I also decided then that whichever college I could afford would be the one I went to. Central Michigan university was where I could afford so off I went to get my degree in photojournalism.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started my photo business I just photographed everything I could. It wasn’t until almost a year ago I found out about quinceanera photography. Which I found by just putting a model call out (free photos for the opportunity to use the images for marketing) for this creative photo idea I had. After that i almost exclusively only photograph quinces, weddings and portraits.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of clients that I have found is word of mouth and Facebook. A lot of my clients have been told about my services from former clients or they asked about me at one of the events I attended.
