Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to GR-O-TH and Kali Crews N/A. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
GR-O-TH and Kali Crews, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
GR-O-TH: What has been so meaningful to me with this project “Doin Somethin Different” is how my respect grew for Kali and myself as artist. I physically saw him push himself to new heights, setting new standards for himself into getting the job done and making sure it sound perfect. As for me this project made me more creative with my writing and how I deliver my words on the beats. As far as the mixing side, the challenges was how to give this project what it needs and how to give it the sound we wanted to have. There’s not a lot of music out there to reference for what we are doing, so in some aspect we had to create our own sound.
Kali Crews: A meaningful project is the current one that’s being worked on with my bandmate GR-O-TH titled “Doin Somethin Different” because it’s something that had me step out my comfort zone. Trying to add guitar riffs to 808 beats, keeping up with his rhymes and melodies was a bit challenging but also felt natural. We’re definitely taking a risk with something that seems fresh and new.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
GR-O-TH: I guess what I want people to know about me, is that I’m not perfect. I’m flawed in every way possible. Trying to be successful at this music journey is very hard and there are so many paths to take. What I have learn is that I must keep my feet planted on a solid foundation. Not letting people or life sway me in every direction. What I want people to understand is that I can be my worst enemy. That I can easily sabotage myself before anybody else can. The key for me in staying disciplined is staying busy loving on my family and stay working on my craft as a mixed engineer and performer. For me staying busy keeps fear and doubt to a minimum. The one thing that set me apart from the pack is perseverance. I try not to think of myself as the best, but always trying to set new standards for myself. If I ever think of myself as the best all I’ve done is put a ceiling on myself. I want to learn more and get better. Moreover I am working really hard with my bandmate Kail Crews to get our brand up and running. One thing I can say is working with him has been such a pleasure. I’m having so much fun working with him as we build this brand together.
Kali Crews: What I want people to know is that I’m very passionate about life, music and most importantly my close friends and family. I consider myself an ambitious person so much that I’d go from plan A to Z (if needed). I’d say my parents are responsible for that giving the fact that they came to the US and worked hard to achieve so much, so much that it fuels me to work hard for what I want in life. So moreover that’s how i approach my creativity when it comes to music. My main mission is to keep learning, growing, as a person and inspire those who needs that motivation and discipline in their life.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
GR-O-TH: The one goal that I have for myself, is to stay centered and grounded. Always stay true to myself and my family. I believe working on that will help me stay true with people I don’t even know or meet for the first time. Doing what Kail and I do is hard work. I’m not talking about making the music and getting it into the hands of people, but the connection with different people we meet. We have to work extra hard on being personable because for the both of us it doesn’t come easy. The more people hear our Rap N’ Roll sound what I have witness, is the connection factor that people have with our music. With that being said people want more of a connection with us, so learning how to be personable is very key to what we do because at the end of the day music is all about how we connect with one another, and we both take that very seriously. Our mission in all of this is very simple, give the people a performance that will help them forget about their problems. From the time we hit the stage until the time we get off the stage, and to just stay true to our sound and our personalities that we put into the music.
Kali Crews: My main goal is to make a living doing something I love doing instead of working 6 days, 12 hour shifts in the hot Texas sun. Thinking about that keeps the guitar in my hand. I can’t speak for all but I can speak for myself when I say that every tune to every note is one step closer for my grill and 2006 Chevy Silveraydo and every struggle and sacrifice is one step closer to financial freedom.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
GR-O-TH: The most rewarding thing of being an artist is when someone is really feeling our music. I have learned a very important lesson when it comes to learning music and that is how does it connect. How does it make someone feel when you experience someone describing or conveying what they have heard, to me that’s more than rewarding. I really have no words to describe that. My creativity works a little different. That’s more of me being selfish and I need to be that way to have the confidence in what I want to say. If I think about being politically correct or not trying to ruffle feathers now I’m putting a chokehold on my creativity. For me creativity should break boundaries, make you think deeply into your subconscious mind, to translate to what you are trying to say. Don’t ever be scared to fall deep into your own creativity whether it be through music, spoken words, a paintbrush, or a business, remember to always express yourself.
Kali Crews: The rewarding part for me is having a way to express feelings through my guitar whether it’s frustration, excitement, sadness, the things that make up our emotions. For me emotions can bring out the best or worst in us and I think that playing guitar finds that line of balance. The best way that I can put it, is when someone came up to me and told me the song “Rollercoaster” off of my “A Howl 4 Help” EP spoke to their emotions. That is an a example of an rewarding feeling.
