Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gotti Doll. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Gotti, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Growing up my dream job was always to be a teacher. I was so serious about it at a time I had a whole classroom set up in a room in my house! A full chalkboard, desks and chairs my mom got from an actual school, books/workbooks, etc. I would even print out lessons and had a binder full for each day of work for my imaginary students. I just knew that’s what I would be doing forever but once I got in touch with the beauty industry there was no turning back. After I took my first client and seen how I could make people feel I had a whole knew destiny. I could make my own hours and pick my customers. The freedom of working for YOU feels amazing. So with that being said yes, I am happier being a business owner. I have thought from time to time on my slow weeks if or what it would be like to have a regular job but I truly have no desire to work for anyone else besides myself. I know that’ that is what comes with being an entrepreneur, slow days, slow weeks, even slow months. The fact that I’m not solely in it for financial gain keeps me afloat during difficult times. I love what I do. I’ve built an entire clientele and I wouldn’t trade them or my career for anything.
Gotti, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the hair business as a teenager. Of course I was playing in my dolls hair as a child but it got serious as I got older. My family has a long history of hairstylists. So it really comes natural to me. All the basics of doing hair were never taught to me, I just woke up and knew how to braid, sew, etc. So when I was 14, starting a new journey, at a new school, I was basically forced to style my own hair due to family issues. At the time I was really sad and a little angry about it, but looking back on it now I’m grateful because I would’ve never met my true love and I wouldn’t be who I am today.
I provide high quality services for all types of people who are serious about enhancing their look. Those services can range from a simple glue-less quick bond in style to a fully custom colored wig unit. I also have a line still being built and perfected with products and accessories designed specifically to keep your hair long lasting and beautiful.
I feel like the best problems I solve for my customers and clients is uncertainty and insecurity. A lot of women and people want to try new styles and not sure what color or cut would fit them best, I have an eye for what works for each person individually. So when that chair turns around each and every one of my clients feel like they’re in the right place every time. That’s what sets me apart from a lot of the industry. Clean work characterized with my personal touch but also still keeping up with trends etc. Great customer service and treating all my clients equally. I’m most proud of the many long term relationships I’ve built and also my ability to see and execute any ideas they bring to me and that allows them to trust me with their most important days and times of their lives.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I have vendors for all of my offered products. From hair and lashes to my Edge Art Gel and satin sleep sets. Each of them took a lot of time and patience to find. I went through so many different vendors, testing so many different products, wasting lots of money to find my desired quality. I got discouraged and set back many times but the main thing is to keep going! The biggest lesson I learned along the way is that you must be willing to invest in your brand, you get what you put in. Another lesson is to be prepared for trial and error periods. If you find your desired results on your first test of products then lucky you but typically that’s not the case. So you must be willing to try things and not like them and repeat until you reach your target. Don’t buy in bulk until then.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my personality and customer service is just as important as my quality of work. Being someone my clients and customers are comfortable with is the biggest plus for me and my brand. Being respectful, professional, and still fun and supportive helps me get and keep long term clients and customers.
