We recently connected with Got Now and have shared our conversation below.
Got, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A big risk I’ve taken is letting go of opportunity that didn’t suit my spirit or well being. Being undervalued, overworked and working hard for someone else’s vision can make you feel like you still have to endure it in order to make ends meet as a creative but in the past year I was able to make a leap away from some of the opportunities that just did not go along with my vision creatively. It was a tough risk to take but in the end it led me to the right opportunities where I am currently valued and appreciated for my own creative output without having to compromise my artistry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the DJ industry from my love of music. It was always passion over paycheck for me. My passion has led me to some great opportunities and continues to do so. I’d say my creative way of combining all sorts of music from different genres and eras together sets me apart from others. I can take a song from 1969 and have everyone singing along then bringing them back to the current day in a matter of minutes and having people of all ages and background in unison. A little bit of everything for every one. I’m constantly discovering music from all eras that become my new favorite songs today. What I’m most proud of today is simply being able to express myself creatively in my own way and be valued for it without compromising my artistic values. I love doing all sorts of events but it seems that the ones I’ve been attracting are ones that I love to do wholeheartedly.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve been blessed with some beautiful opportunities but at the same time when those opportunities come to an end sometimes you’re left feeling the rush of falling off the great mountain you fought hard to climb. I remember being on the Rolling Loud stage in 2017 in front of 40,000 people and feeling the greatest feeling in my career to not knowing when the next opportunity for me to do what I love will be. The rise is amazing but the fall can be discouraging. Having to pawn my turntables to make ends meet. I went and worked harder than ever to get them back and never result to doing it again. This led me to my next great opportunity which was having my own night and position at Wood Tavern in Miami. This was the greatest feat to my career at the time and when the pandemic came it was taken away for a short while. In that time I didn’t let the circumstances stop me from doing what I love and I streamed on their social media platform for fans all the while we were stuck in the house. When the venue opened again I was not reached out to right away to continue my stint and ultimately led to no longer being a part of their establishment. This was a tough thing to endure but since I’ve felt the bottom before I knew I just had to move forward and reestablish myself and sure enough I was blessed to do so and now I find myself in an even better position than before.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to go to sleep and wake up knowing you never sold out to someone else’s vision. Waking up and knowing your creative output is in tact with your artistic vision. There’s no greater reward than feeling good about not compromising your self worth for a paycheck but instead gaining your paychecks from your passion.
