We recently connected with Gordy Grundy and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Gordy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
“In Life, risk provides a great deal of entertainment, certainly an education and a reminder that Chance or Luck dominates our best intentions. Win some, lose some.
“Beyond the night sweats, I’ve never been afraid of risk. And there are a few risks which I wish I had taken. I’m a SoCal kid and in that geographical ethos, risk taking is a part of the personality.
“Our current risk, the Art Report Today project must be sustainable; it has gotta show a profit. How do we do that in an unending Covid economy, with high inflation and a failing media market?
“We launched before Covid, when the world was bright and rosy. The lockdowns slapped us upside the head with one spill after another. We’re still spinning.
“The very subject matter of our news site is a risk. The Fine Arts? Culture? Clearly, K-Pop, Pickleball or Porn are much more interesting to the general public.
“We hung in throughout Covid and kept expanding. In addition to the site, our much-loved weekly Sunday newsletter is fantastic, with an extremely high open rate.
“Forever risking, we are getting ready to launch Art Drops Editions. The program is designed to encourage new folks to collect art. We want everyone, not just the One Percent, to experience that great, all encompassing and undefinable sensory feeling of buying a work of art. We will present an affordable and experiential introduction with a series of Blue Chip ‘Art Drops.’
“To all of our free Sunday Lounge subscribers, we offer the ‘drop’ of an affordable limited edition print or object. You have three days to order and then the edition is closed. The generosity of the artists and Art Drops have made this artwork affordable to new collectors worldwide. We are striving to mitigate our risk in new fresh ways.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
“I’m definitely a CanvasRebel. I’ve always been rebellious and I’ve painted on many canvases. The fine arts have been a part of my life since the get-go. My living situation has always revolved around the studio. As a Los Angeles based painter, I have been active in the community and exhibit frequently.
“I thought my first publication was in high school, with an underground newspaper. An old aunt just provided evidence that my first was at age six with a neighborhood rag. I have always written. Twice I have been a ‘first read’ arts columnist. I’ve authored several books of essays, a novel, a novella and several plays. I had a lot of fun publishing “Gen F” an anthology of LA writers.
“Unfortunately, I was born with charm, not a trust fund. I was lucky to fall into a day job that paid well and demanded few hours. When a movie studio was preparing to release a new film, I would come up with creative ideas to promote and market the film. And then I would manufacture and distribute those items. So, you can say that Hollywood paid for all of my mayhem.
“At present, the searing focus of art and life is Art Report Today. The international arts and culture news platform ArtReportToday.com has been publishing daily since April First 2019. We offer over 18 fantastic magazines on film, textile arts, street art, ceramics, contemporary fine art—the whole milieu. As an aggregated news site, we bring you the best the world has to offer. When we first realized that no such website existed, we were blown away. Then, instantly, we were resolved to make it happen.
“With a cool, happy vibe, Art Report Today reads fast, young and loose. The fine arts media tends to be elitist and snooty; we want to show the arts as I have seen it: fun, fast and exciting with a very groovy cast of characters.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
“Absolutely. The non-creative has a very difficult time comprehending the lifestyle and decision-making process of the artist. It’s mad! It’s baffling! And that is A-OK. An artist will spend their last dime to complete an art work; most people consider that to be a frivolous action and a poor investment.
“There are many ways you can live a Life. In a society, there is the big norm and the little fringe, that small segment that does not conform to the norm. The creative. The rebel. The outsider. The hippie. The artist. Some prefer a path less travelled. That lifestyle is not easy to understand for most people. Non-creatives have a hard time comprehending what many consider to be a disorderly life.
“Making art is essentially a process of making many hard decisions. Color shade? Brush size? Tempura or fresco? Smooth or rough? Paper or canvas? A million questions beg for answers. The effort is hard work.
“I would suggest to the non-creative, ‘Let’s focus on the work.’ Artists tend to be very productive. Artists are very aware of schedules and making deadlines. Look at an artist’s body of work. It’s fascinating over time.
“Let’s celebrate those who choose to make these efforts. Let’s stop a moment to look for and feel Beauty.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
“Hands down, it is the work. My world revolves around the work. The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the work. It feels so good, I want to keep doing more of it.
“One could easily consider it an addiction. Changing your life to entertain and accommodate that passion.
“In the process of creative work, there is a focus, so intense, that many consider it an enlightenment. I have written much about the Artist’s Bubble, that beautiful and warm feeling of freedom, serendipity, luck and endless curiosity. You never want to leave the beautiful Bubble. It is the place that makes me happiest.
