We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gordon Bolton . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gordon below.
Hi Gordon, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name says it all, Piano Movers of Texas. We did not realize how effective the name would be for the internet. With the the key words in the name relative to what we do, it makes it very easy to search for us.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a piano moving and storage company. We are based in the Dallas area and try to cover as much of the state as we can. We have a crew in Houston each week and are in the Austin/San Antonio area a couple of times a month. We also service east and west Texas. We have accepted and accomplished many challenges throughout the years. Memorable piano moves over the years such as moving a 9′ concert grand out of a 3rd floor balcony from the the largest house in Texas. Moving a 7′ Steinway grand into a choir loft of a church with a forklift.
However we feel that we build a reputation one piano move at at time. Although we move many pianos, to each customer it is possibly their only move and we understand that.
Pianos are indeed instruments, but they are so much more, family members and memories.
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
We had a limited presence in Houston. There was a family owned business in the Houston area that we referred when we were not available. Through the grapevine we had heard he was retiring and contacted him about selling the business to us. We felt it would help expand our scope in Houston, and he had a great reputation with his customers. It was a very smooth transition and a gentlemen’s agreement. We agreed to an initial amount of earnest money and paid a percentage of sales for a certain amount of time.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Doing the right thing every day, whether it put money in the bank or not. Using our experience and training to do the best we can.
