We recently connected with Goonie Jay and have shared our conversation below.
Goonie , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
As an artist being misunderstood is a blessing and a curse. The misunderstanding of who some of us are as people, and the stories we tell sometimes scares people away, but this year I began to see if used to leverage the right way, those same stories can become inspirational rather than confusing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Most people know me as “The Real Goonie Jay” , a rapper based out of CT. My story comes with many chapters, some uplifting, some lessons, and a mix of many different emotions.
What sets me apart from my competition and peers is music is embedded into my dna. I’ve been writing for close to 17 years and performing on and off for about 10, however professionally doing both over the last 2 years.
I also am very well known for my products in the dispensary world, which has helped me build a multi level relationship with my customers and consumers. Allowing me to meet and work with. some of my own role models and inspirations who motivated me to get where I am.
My proudest achievements are my musical catalog, particularly my hit song “Ghost” which has amassed over 7 million streams, as well as performing for a crowd of 10,000 people in May of this past year.
I want people to know when they see my work that it’s from the heart, and that’s why it’s so raw. I never sugar coat or hide from the truth, and I stand for my belief that anyone can do anything , they just need to want it bad enough.
I am actively touring, releasing music, collaborating with other artists, and hosting some of the biggest events/ projects in my home state and the east coast.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is when people who I’ve never personally met tell me that my music has impacted them in one way or another. Regardless if it’s lyrics that they connect with, or the process of overcoming objections it means everything to me. My entire brand, and message stems from feeling alone or different than those around me, which to see resonated with others is rewarding to me, more so than the money.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think a lot of people even creatives, struggle to absorb is the fact that creation is not the only piece to the puzzle. Being creative is sometimes the easiest part, having your message and hard work reach the right set of eyes is what we all hope for.
