We were lucky to catch up with Goody Tyler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Goody, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path in college. I was always a writer, even at a young age writing in my diary. Once I graduated high-school, I would listen to music and these ideas for videos would come to mind. I started writing them full out and honestly, I just sat on them for a while. I had a high-school friend who had since moved to Atlanta and began working as a model. She really inspired me to just “go for it.” I emailed her a few video treatment ideas and asked if she thought they were good. She did! She forwarded them to a video director she knew, and although grateful for her, I did not have my hopes high for a response from him. I was surprised when he reached out personally and he also loved my ideas. He hired me as his executive assistant, and from that moment it was up! Being on a professional, music, video set for the first time really solidified my creative pursuit. It was the reason I made the decision to major in theatre and film in college. Forwarding my friend that email gave me the push I needed.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After I was hired as an executive assistant, I felt very much on the right path. It’s one of those situations where you feel at home. However, I was still in college. Juggling the two was not easy, but because I loved what I did, I didn’t realize how bold it was at that time. I was truly on a constant high of creativity. I was gaining the knowledge of theatrical productions at school and when we booked music videos, I was able to fly to Atlanta or California and get a working knowledge on set under the mentorship of a professional.
The main thing I want people to know pursuing creative endeavors, the only thing that makes you a creator is to create! The only thing that makes you a performer is to perform. The only thing that makes you a writer is to write. There are no short cuts in this industry. No one can take away from me the training and real life experience I gained during that time.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew the power of networking early on in my journey. I cannot stress enough how putting yourself out there and meeting people can prove to be life changing. You never know who knows who. You never know who might call you ten years later down the line like, “Hey, I’m producing a film and want you to be a part of it.” If you’re someone like me, to where networking doesn’t come naturally, I encourage you to push yourself. Put yourself out there! The honest truth is, almost every opportunity I have received is because or someone I knew was are of my creative endeavors… and they knew someone knew someone who knew someone. BUT, keep in mind that others can only get you so far. Opportunity has to meet talent and talent has to meet luck. Once you get in the room, you have to take it from there. Study your craft and prepare yourself. When the doors open, you’ll be able to walk in with confidence.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect as a creative is getting the ideas out of my mind and into a physical space. For me that can be anything from a song, a poem, a beat, an audition, a design! Just being able to see it manifest is my favorite part. Even if I create something and it has no where to go at the moment, I enjoy it as it. When the opportunity comes for my creation to find its home, it’s ready. I already have it in the archives. I’m prepared.
