We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful GONER (Evan Miller). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with GONER below.
GONER, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I definitely always try to make sure I’m not “unreachable” but at the same time I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to my character. I always want to be there for anyone that needs it, and to be the light people need when they feel like they have nothing but dark. But, I’ve unfortunately have had a lot of people overstep boundaries or disrespect me and think I won’t handle it. It’s also safe to say, I love being the first to correct someone haha.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For everyone that doesn’t know me yet, Im a 24 year old artist who moved across the country to chase their dreams & all that fun stuff!
I spent years being a photographer for music festivals such as ULTRA in Miami, and really got the courage to attempt at making music on my own after that. I’ve sold out numerous shows in the US, and have been lucky enough to achieve multi-million streams on the songs I made in my bedroom.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think people really need to start paying artists what they’re worth, there are so many starving artists and ginormous amounts of talent that should be able to at least live comfortably.
Pay for your friends show tickets, buy albums, rock some merch. It all helps more than you could imagine.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
From my experience, it seems as people who aren’t in creative roles don’t understand the amount of “Free” or “For exposure” work creative people do.
Everyone is floored when they find out upcoming artists 75% of the time aren’t being paid from shows, and maybe even had to pay, to play that show.
You have to extend yourself and do a lot of work you aren’t seeing a return on, and unfortunately it’s all part of the process in the creative world.
