We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Goliath Oboyo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Goliath, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I came to the realization that I wanted to work in the creative industry because I wanted to use my experiences working in corporate America to impart practical information to my community. As a result, I established Addition Podcast, an educational platform with the mission assisting the upcoming generation of black and minority people by supplying them with knowledge from professionals across a range of industries, including entrepreneurs, athletes, models, artists, content creators, authors, managers, designers, healthcare providers, and more.
Noun: Addition- The action or process of adding something to something else.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Goliath Oboyo is an Ethiopian immigrant who arrived in the United States in 2000. He earned a marketing degree with a professional sales specialization from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Goliath realized the need to share actionable knowledge with his community based on his experiences working in corporate America, so he started Addition Podcast.
The mission of the Addition Podcast is to disseminate knowledge in order to empower the future generation of black and minority people. What makes him unique is the expansive vision he has for the podcast and the vast number of lives he can positively influence. Goliath wants the community to know that he wants to use his platform to start a business that will help young people network and find mentors, employment, and other opportunities in industries they are interested in, as well as maybe build a creative agency or place for them to use.
Noun: Addition- The action or process of adding something to something else.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have been in the creative industry for about a year now and still haven’t made a dollar from my craft. The bigger picture is impacting the community, so I spend my earnings from work to fund my podcast thus far. Sometimes you never know when you will get your shot, so you have to have the resilience to continue on your mission no matter the obstacles.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Although I’m still growing on social media and am not yet where I want to be, I have gained a lot of knowledge that will be helpful for the upcoming creative in growing their following. When posting for an example, you must maintain consistency. Set a schedule for how frequently you’ll post and abide by it. Find a niche, utilize relevant hashtags to draw users to your page, be creative, and run giveaways. Make sure to respond to all of your follower questions, comments and direct messages, and just be engaged. I have a lot more to say, but for the time being I’ll stop here.
