We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Goldy Locks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Goldy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I have been blessed with meeting some incredibly beautiful people along my entertainment journey. People from all walks of life, ethnicities, and financial backgrounds. There are too many kind things people have done throughout my life, but a recent one stands out. I have a friend whose full-time job is a pretty important one, a mom. She’s an Uber service to her kids, partner, chef, maid, you name it. That doesn’t leave her very much time to go earn her own money so I know it’s tight. She slipped a Valentine’s Day note in my mailbox with 3 “stones.” They were for friendship and strength, success. This was worth so much more than anything monetary. It’s the thought, plan, and effort. So many people in this world think… what would I “get” that person to show love? It should ALWAYS be the thought. :-)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Goldy Locks, and my journey into the biz started at the ripe old age of 3. Picture this: my uncle, sketching away portraits of models in the vibrant scene of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Before the days of endless selfies, those sketches were gold! They’d get snagged up by major companies, determining who’d land the coolest gigs in commercials and movies. Uncle was onto something, and he convinced my folks that I belonged in front of the camera.
I continued to do commercials and films and started singing and before I knew it I was touring abroad at a very young age. Opera was a wonderful genre but soon the radio tunes were calling my name. Pop and rock became my jam, catching the eye of producers all over Minneapolis, even some hanging around Prince’s legendary Paisley Park.
Now, let’s talk hustle! Props to my mom and dad for instilling a killer work ethic in me, but let’s not forget all those gigs I juggled as a kid. When you’re pulling in cash before you hit puberty, professionalism comes naturally. Trust me, it’s the secret sauce for major success.
Here’s a fun fact: I had a knack for dumpster diving at the music studio. Yeah, I know, sounds wild! But hear me out. Prince was tossing out fabric left and right, and I couldn’t bear to see it go to waste. Long story short, my trash adventures landed me a gig selling outfits for the stars, right out of the studio’s backdoor!
But hold up, rewind a bit. At 7, I put my foot down. Those modeling photographers we were working with? Total creeps! These pedophiles were trying to take advantage of so many little kids. Not one of them escaped my radar. I developed the talent of “choice” words to defend myself from these predators. I took matters into my own hands. Armed with nothing but grit and determination, I became the neighborhood’s go-to photographer, capturing dance moves and sports victories like a boss.
Fast forward to today, and I’m on a whole new adventure. Forget kiddie shoots; I’m all about celebrating fierce women over 40. They’re the real MVPs, and I’m honored to shine a spotlight on their badassery. Seriously, check out the link! It’s pure magic. https://thefactoryphotographybygoldy.co/
And guess what? My humble studio in Nashville is where the magic happens. Sure, it may not be the size of a football field, but it gets the job done. Plus, it’s seen the likes of some major names in the music biz. https://www.thefactoryphotography.com/
Now, about those cameras. Let’s just say I didn’t start with top-of-the-line gear. Nope, I scavenged thrift stores in my hood for those babies. But here’s the thing: success doesn’t care where you’re from. It’s all about the hunger, the drive, and yeah, a sprinkle of consistency. So, if you’ve got a dream, chase it! Who knows where it might lead?
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I have immense respect for the diverse roles each individual plays in this vast universe. As a creative soul, I understand that some folks with more traditional occupations might not fully grasp the unique challenges we face. It’s not about complaining or seeking sympathy; it’s about shedding light on the realities we encounter. As a woman, I’ve encountered my fair share of uncomfortable situations of sexual harassment. It’s not easy to speak up or report such incidents when the consequences could mean being ostracized or losing opportunities. It’s a delicate balance that many of us navigate daily.
For me, personal safety always comes first. I wouldn’t hesitate to decline an invitation to someone’s hotel room, and if I found myself in an unexpected situation, I’d assert my boundaries firmly and swiftly. How you act sets the tone. If I happened upon someone’s room unexpectedly, they greeted me in a robe, I’d tell him to have a nice nap.
Adapting and persevering in the face of adversity is key. I make it crystal clear that I mean business, even if it means coming across as tough or unyielding. Whether things change or not you have to learn how to survive and navigate. I always make sure everyone knows I mean business. I may come across as hardcore in a little callous but at the end of the day, they know that I’m all about business.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Let’s talk about turbocharging your social media game with some genuine flair! The secret sauce? Keep it real and engage with your audience like they’re your BFFs. No room for ego trips here—just sprinkle kindness everywhere you go and watch the magic unfold!
Remember to give your followers that personal touch by addressing them by name when you chat it up. It’s not just about dropping content bombs and ghosting. Nah, that’s like spinning in circles on a merry-go-round—fun but kinda pointless.
Now, if you’re looking for the master class in building a fanbase, queue up Taylor Swift! She’s basically the captain of the ship when it comes to creating a loyal army of supporters. Take notes, because her playbook is pure gold!
