We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Gold Shimmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Gold , appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Playing funk can be misunderstood Honestly!
I think sometimes we miss the fact that Funk in genral is not only fun to dance to, but it’s liberating. Shouting amongst a crowd of strangers and dancing till youre done can be one of the best experiences you’ve ever had. While others can see it as “old” music we are here to prove that’s just not the case.
Personally I’ve had many times being misunderstood unfortunately as the leader of a group in other regards . I think there are a lot of stereotypes about how that person can be and even with the best intentions sometimes feelings get hurt, people feel their ideas are not heard etc.
My personal experiences have taught me though you always have to work with people who are willing to work with you in good times and hard times. Come to the table and share what’s going on.

Absolutely!
Gold Shimmer is a 6 piece LA based Indie – Funk band. It is a surrealist collaboration led by songwriter JD Venter. Influenced by Tame Impala,Gorillaz, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. They can groove, get real, and seriously vibe out. Driven by a curiosity of music’s limitations, nontraditional narrative, and theatrics They aim to take their audience for a ride through another time and dimension every live preformance.
The band is currently working on getting ready for our tour and our performance at the OC fair on the hanger main stage Friday, July 26th

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Definitely
We feel Funk is well known and is well loved when played live but one of our main goals is to connect with all the other bands and artists in our genre to connect and strengthen our scene!
One of those goals includes creating a funk festival that goes up and down the coasts with bands from all over.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Frankly,
Liking and commenting on socials has become even more crucial for bands coming up. Of course buying merch and coming to shows is kind of a given.
But engaging on any artists socials heavily right now would be a way to help them get seen by other people who might find them through the algorithm!
