We were lucky to catch up with Gold Frames on Brown Skin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gold Frames on Brown Skin, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My learning was based on imitation. Since I am a visual learner, everything I have learned is from watching someone else perform the task. As an example, I write with my right hand, but I hold my pencil like a left-handed person, since I learned how to write from a left-handed person; however, I am ambidextrous (self-taught). Visual learners learn to observe everything to avoid missing their next life lesson. However, this can come at a cost when there are no examples to follow. The creativity part comes into play at that point.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jarvis Orange and I’m known as “Gold Frames on Brown Skin”. Over the past decade, I have worked with several major artists in the music industry and written music for a Fortune 500 company. When I was in middle school, I started playing music. Tuba was my instrument of choice. Then I decided to make my own music, focusing mainly on songwriting. As a songwriter, I have written numerous songs for many acts, but writer credits are not always included. As a result, I began to make my own music. Due to my passion for songwriting and features, I still offer this service. However, since I am a seasoned businessperson, it will cost you a little now. I take pride in writing all of my music, so everything you hear on my songs comes solely from my brain and heart. This also allows me to own the rights to my music and control my own destiny. Now I can make money off of my music without having to worry about a record label taking a cut of the profits. I’m very proud of my music and I’m excited to share it with the world.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I create, I enjoy listening and watching an idea that was conceived in my head come to life. With the legendary poet, Big Rube from the Dungeon Family, I recently worked on a song called “Anti-Naruto”. My idea for the song came to me while playing Elder Scrolls Online freestyling in my head late at night. I had the idea for the song, which beat to buy and the vocal arrangements. All the way down to finding Rube’s phone number was planned. My amazement at myself came when I completed the song. As an artist, it’s a rewarding process that helps me grow and develop. It is possible to refine my ideas by using feedback from others, making them even better than I initially envisioned them. I’m happy with the outcome and believe it has potential to reach a broad audience. I’m excited to see what people’s reactions will be, and I’m eager to continue to refine my craft and create even more amazing music.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non-creatives don’t understand that it takes courage to put yourself out there for the public to either dismantle or admire. It takes strength to put yourself in a vulnerable position and to create something that may or may not be accepted. It takes resilience to keep going and to carry on despite any criticism or failure. Ultimately, it takes courage to share a part of yourself with the world.
