We were lucky to catch up with Godfrey Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Godfrey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up I’ve always had a dying passion for football; achieving many milestones like making a college team and even a semi-pro team. After a while I felt I was getting older and I kind of lost my love for the game, because i realized taking care of my body and staying out of harms way became more important to me. With that fire for football burned out I felt that I needed to find that feeling again.
At this time I was working two jobs and I decided to go back to school for graphic design. With this outlet I felt like I tapped into something different. Making something from an idea gave me a sense of fulfillment; and as I got better I got more curious on how i can transfers these ideas to different mediums. At this moment, I realized that I wanted to start a clothing line and all i needed was the name for it.
I spent hours and days trying to figure out a name, and couldn’t land on anything.
One night; I would never forget; I had a dream with the word “LOADED” flashing in like a strobe light effect, and I chanted “Living Off A Dream Everyone Doubted” a few time before I popped out of bed.
Knowing that this was it I woke my wife out of her sleep to see what she thought of the new name God gave me for he business; and this was the moment i started to pursue this path professionally.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Godfrey Campbell Jr, I am a creative graphic designer and aspiring fashion designer.
As I reflect to what lead me to this business I go back to when I was growing up and didn’t really have a great understanding of being dressed well or coordinating all of my pieces to make me look good. I’ve always had my older brother who would assist me in 85% of the things I wore and I’ve always liked how he always put himself together; he took risks, and he always stood out. I thought that was cool.
Once I got into high school and my brother was no longer there to assist, I had to take matters in my own hands and do what works for me and who I was becoming. I was inspired by magazines, music videos, and sometimes just watching other people. These things, I believe lead me to want to create my own looks as far as shirts, socks, hoodies, joggers, hats, etc.
I’ve always had a positive spirit; even when I get into a dark space, I always find something positive that brings me out of that. With L.O.A.D.E.D (Living Off A Dream Everyone Doubted) I am actually taking the and light and dark pieces of my life and creating art or phrases that will be a reminder to myself from what I have been through and could inspire or help someone that sees it. To put it in perspective, the very first phrase created was “What You Aiming For?”, Actually asking myself “What are the goals for this business?”, “What’s the end goal?” and “What do you plan to get out of this?” The next phrase was “Never Do It Without A Purpose”. I ask myself countless times why was I doing this, I could be doing anything else but I chose to do this; who am I serving when I go this route? After these two phrases came about, I start to notice a pattern and these phrases started to feel more like building blocks. I notice I have the What and the Why, so whats next?
“Never Doubt Yourself”, I feel this phrase made the brand come full circle because It’s all faith driven, you have to believe in your goals and why you’re doing it. It truly starts from within and I believe my clients do see that and when they buy a piece from me, their buying it for a reminder for their-self or to help someone around them.
This is my seventh year operating this clothing brand, and Im always so proud when a previous customer returns just to tell me they either received a lot of compliments from there last pick up or people are asking where they can get the merch from. It always put me in a space where i would just reflect on how far I’ve came and then how much more I can do to keep that energy reciprocating. It’s just truly a blessing.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My particular goal is to have a powerhouse factory with an umbrella of different clients and brands we work with, and to help them achieve the dreams they believe in.
My mission, on the other hand is to spread faith through the brand. I feel like this has been my mission since day one because of the state of our society with depression and suicide rates on the incline, I feel some may need just a little motivation to help them realize that ” The rainy days don’t define you” and you have to “keep growing”.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Of course! This journey take a lot of research, time, and money. Even when I think i have enough resources, Im searching for better ones. One resource that I wish I knew about earlier would have to be my supplier for packaging. I’ve found this resource in year 6, and If I’ve had it earlier in my career I feel like I would’ve found an even better one by now.
