We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Goddess Bae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Goddess below.
Goddess, appreciate you joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
When I first started my brand, I had high expectations of my family and friends supporting it. I felt as if they should be sharing my content, telling people about my products, and purchasing the products that they could benefit from. I found myself annoyed a lot of times when their support did not match the expectation that I had. As I grew in my entrepreneurship journey, I learned not to “expect” support from anyone, and I learned how to connect with my audience. Since my brand was started during the pandemic, social media was pretty much the only way to reach other people at the time. I spent a lot of time researching how to market on social media, where learning my target audience was the #1 lesson. Once I learned who my target audience is, it was easier to make content that directly targeted them. The more that I connected with my target audience, the less I felt bothered by who wasn’t supporting me.
My brand provides natural feminine hygiene products, with a majority of our supporters being between the ages of 25-55. Since our products are made using herbs and other nourishing ingredients, they are known for reducing infections, reducing period cramps, reducing menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness and low libido, assisting with fertility challenges, etc. Since I know the benefits of our products, I market directly to the women who would benefit the most from them. I learned to be okay with people not feeling compelled to support my brand. If they don’t see the value in the benefits of my products, they’re not my target audience.
My brand has become successful from the support of strangers. I learned who my target audience is, how to relate to them with my marketing, and I focus on providing value to them. It’s counterproductive to become upset about who isn’t supporting your brand, more than you focus on building a brand with genuine supporters who love your products/services. When you have support from your target audience, they will market for you. They’ll tell everyone that they know about your brand, gift your products, send reviews, make content for you, give you words of encouragement, and show love and support that people who aren’t a part of your audience probably wouldn’t do.
Don’t focus on getting support from family and friends if it doesn’t come natural from them, focus on getting support from your target audience. It feels better when the support is authentic, and not forced due to receiving pity purchases, or people buying from you out of obligation.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up, I didn’t learn much about how to take care of my feminine hygiene. Once I became an adult, I started developing yeast infections and bacterial infections. I was going to the doctor to receive medication to treat the bacterial infection, and since the antibiotics killed both the good and bacteria, I would always develop a yeast infection during the treatment. Once I treated the yeast infection with over the counter medication, the bacterial infection would make its way back shortly after. Not only was I experiencing recurring infections, but my period was also thrown out of whack and I had also been diagnosed with PCOS and infertility. I had the most painful periods, with huge blood clots. I still remember skipping months coming on my period, then when it came, I’d have dry and black chalky looking blood that was accompanied by the WORST cramps of my life. I wondered how was I cramping so hard and barely had a period?
I went through this cycle of infections for 4 years, until I took matters into my own hands. In 2017, I began looking into natural ways to balance my pH, increase fertility, and regulate my period. I had notebooks full of information from my daily research. I tried a number of crazy remedies like putting water, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar inside of a douche bottle and using it, prebiotic suppositories, yoni pearls, and yoni steams from another company. It wasn’t until 2019 when I started mixing up my own blends of herbs and doing consistent yoni steams that I started seeing results. I would research different antibacterial and antifungal herbs, brew them like tea, and sit over them to perform a yoni steam. I did this for a month and my absent period came. I had fresh, red blood. I also had successfully treated my recurring bacterial and yeast infections too! Over time, the steams had reduced the painful cramps from a 10 down to a 2.
I began telling every woman that I knew about my new found discovery, in hopes of bringing healing to other women in my circle. I was on a self-love journey during the time, where losing weight was one of my biggest goals. During my journey to building self-confidence, I learned about waist beads. Waist beads can be worn for spiritual protection, to increase fertility, to symbolize femininity, and to help track weight loss. Since I was developing confidence in the midst of my weight loss journey, I felt like these were perfect for me. On May 21, 2022, my husband, my son, and I went to Michael’s to grab my supplies and then we all made a string of waist beads for me. The next day, we were selling them to women around the world for $5 each.
Business was BOOMING from the beginning, but a few months later, I realized that I wasn’t really fulfilled with making waist beads and jewelry. I felt like I could do more to impact the world. Goddess Waist Beads changed to Bae’s Goddess Beads, and now, we’re known as Goddess Bae.
Goddess Bae started with the Goddess Yoni Pearls and the Goddess Yoni Oil. For the first year, I spent time learning who my target audience is. It wasn’t until year two when Goddess Bae really started growing and making more sales. We have since expanded to an entire feminine hygiene brand. We have feminine wash, wipes, spray, body oils, body mists, and more! All of our products were created to assist me with symptoms that I was facing, or me wanting to build my own confidence and explore my feminine energy. I decided to provide them to other women around the world, and here we are!
Goddess Bae is an extension of my own self-care and healing journey.
I have handmade and sold over 100,000 products, served thousands of women, helped women get pregnant, treated bacterial and yeast infections, helped women build confidence, sold my products in international countries, my products are available at Aja’s spa in Memphis, I received accolades from a gynecologist who raved about how my products are the best she’s ever tried, I’ve presented my brand at a doctor’s office, gone viral, and I’m still busy changing lives!
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve built a successful brand from NO experience, bad credit, and no money saved. I was homeless and living in a hotel just 6 months before I started Goddess Bae. I went from feeling like I had lost everything, to building something that will secure my family for generations. I’m proud of the fact that I got kicked out of college, but I still found my own path in life. I’m proud of myself for never giving up on myself, or my brand. No matter how hard things have become, I’ve kept pushing forward with purpose. It takes A LOT of sacrifice, discipline, time, energy, and improvement to grow and maintain a successful brand. I’m proud of myself for making it to year 3 when 20% of businesses fail within the first two years.
Everything about my brand sets it apart from the rest. I research everything thoroughly, and each ingredient is selected with intention. The connections that I’ve build with my audience means the world to me. I don’t do this for money, it’s truly something that I’m passionate about. I’ve cried a lot of happy tears after reading about the success stories from my products. I take my time to handmake, package, and ship out the products to my supporters. The packages look amazing when they arrive, they smell divine, and the products works wonders! I truly love what I do, I truly love to change lives, and I am truly proud of how far I’ve come.
What sets my brand apart from other businesses is ME.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes, I hand make most of my products! I have a vendor who assists with producing the Goddess Wipes, Goddess Yoni Pearls, and the Goddess Scrubs (when in stock). The rest of the products have been developed from my trial and error with different ingredients and testing out different methods. I watched youtube videos and also compiled my own research and knowledge to create the products on my line.
I found my vendor by taking my time to do research, developed a relationship with them before making a purchase to ensure that my business’ needs could be met, read reviews, and tested the products on myself. Once the vendor products were to my satisfaction, I started providing them to my supporters!
I’ve learned how to properly formulate my products along the way. I had never made any products before, so I started from scratch. In the beginning, I was freestyling as I was making the products. They NEVER came out consistent, and it eventually became an issue for my customers. My advice about manufacturing your own products is to get a good, solid formula in place BEFORE you start providing them to your customers. Consistency matters, and just because products are hand made, it doesn’t mean you can’t produce consistent products! Be sure that you are producing products in a clean, sterile environment as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Transitioning to a successful six-figure brand has been one of the biggest pivots that I’ve had to make. I went from being an unorganized business with more of a “hustler” mindset, to developing processes that will help my brand run more efficiently for years to come.
I have learned how important it is to set up automations that can free up more time for me to do work in other areas of my brand. For the first two years, I spent a lot of time building up the back end of my brand. Over the last year, production has taken up SO much of my time and energy, that the back office work was unfortunately neglected. I’ve taken the time to review the current processes and procedures that I have, and I’ve been targeting my areas of weakness and researching ways to improve them. I’ve been learning the importance of having structure, sticking to my policies, planning accordingly, and being more organized overall. This transition has also shed light on the fact that I had lost my work-life balance.
Working from home can make it hard to separate the two. I have implemented off days and set up boundaries so that I can have time to pour into myself and my family, outside of my business. Having proper balance between the two is a key factor in having a successful brand, but not overwhelming yourself with work.
I’ve been developing efficient strategies, planning, implementing changes, and constantly seeking improvement! Major changes are about to be made in the upcoming month’s with the efficiency of our brand!
