We recently connected with GOcean and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, GOcean thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew when I was ready to pursue a music career when I directed my first music video for my friend Manny. After getting a sense of what it feels to be the man behind the camera, it really spoke to me.
So when I started making music, the inspiration was getting my music videos to be really theatrical. I haven’t released any music videos yet but they are coming real soon.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is GOcean(Gee-Ocean) and I’m an artist out of North Carolina. I say an artist because of how multi-talented I am. Currently, I am working on my next project an EP called ‘Ghetto Cowboy.’ It will be released on May 10th.
I started making music when I dropped my mixtape ‘Bulletproof Smile’ in 2021. It was an idea as I would say because it was my very first time recording music. After bulletproof, I started working on my debut album ‘Wire to Wire.’ Since I decided to really do music, I took my time curating the project. I’m really proud of how selective I was with the production. I had to get the best producers to help me. From March 2021 all the way to November of 2022 I was in the studio almost every week bettering myself and perfecting my craft. That’s another thing I’m proud of, creating an album.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’ve always wanted to figure out a way to change the world. In order for the world to change the culture must change. What has grasp of the future for centuries is music, food, and theatre. I decided to go the music route and eventually venture into theatre.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist I would say is the reception you receive when you put out a project. You can receive a lot of love or you can receive a lot of hate. It really allows you to see the perspective of how it feels to really make art. Art is in the eye of the beholder.
