We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Go-go Amy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Go-go , thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission of my company is to give everybody the opportunity to feel sexy and beautiful. For too long the fashion industry has had a standard of beauty and that has has been harmful to the people who don’t fit into that very small section of humanity. I’m not saying that skinny white people should have their sexiness taken away I’m just saying everyone should be invited to the party. Every person regardless of age, skin color, gender identity, size, or any other trait that just makes humans humans has a unique kind of beauty and I want to use my sewing machine to help highlight that. My goal is to sew clothes and create confidence.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am go-go Amy and I run go-go Amy designs. I make bespoke underwear, swimwear and costumes which I sell on my official website and etsy shop. My designs are fun, sexy and size inclusive. Since each item I sell is made to order I have a lot of clients who have a hard time finding a good fit in fast fashion come to me because I can alter my patterns to fit.
My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was about 6 and sewing has always been a part of my life. I was a theater geek as a kid, and actually I still am now. When I was in NYC going to college for theatrical design I started working in nightclubs as a go-go dancer where I got the oh so clever nickname of go-go Amy. I used to make my own costumes then I started making them for other dancers and making club clothes kind of became my thing. I was really luck to meet Mario Diaz who let me sew for his dancers. Getting to figure out designs and patterns working with his go-go crew helped me learn so much. I will be forever grateful for all the opportunities he’s given me and I’m luck to be able to call him a friend.
Sewing was my side hustle for a long time. After go-go dancing I got into burlesque then circus sideshow stuff. I Started my own traveling vaudeville show called the Pretty Things Peepshow and we toured the world for about 10 years. I made all the costumes in the show and would occasionally do custom orders for other people. Between tours I would sell go-go Dancer clothes.
When the pandemic hit and touring wasn’t an option I decided to turn sewing into my main gig. Sometimes I miss the road and being on stage a little but I have to say my life is really happy now. I get to hang out all day with my adorable dog and sew sexy things for people all over the world. My company is very small but I like it that way. Being able to interact with my customers and see pictures of them rocking my designs is so fun.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help everyone feel beautiful. Especially those who have been made to feel that they are not. You have no idea how happy it makes me when I get a message from a customer thanking me for making something in their size or telling me they have never worn something that fit right before. I also enjoy helping my trans and non binary customers in creating items that fit both their body shape while also helping them express where they fit on the gender spectrum. To me clothing is just fabric that gets wrapped around your body but glamour is wrapping yourself in fabric that makes you feel confident. That confidence is where true beauty comes from. I want everyone to be able to experience that feeling. I may not be able to save the world with a sparkly pair of underpants but if I can use my sewing machine to help change the way someone sees themselves. If I can replace body shame and dysmorphia with confidence then I have changed their world and that means something.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find it very rewarding to create things. I wake up in the morning and there’s a bunch of fabric on the table then at the end of the day there is a huge pile of stuff that didn’t exist earlier. My business is so small that I do all the sewing and I love that every piece passes through my hands. Designing and creating is god like. You get to decide what exists, what it will look like and how it will feel . I know that I’ll never be a millionaire sewing sequins in my living room but I am rich in artists fulfillment and that’s something I never have to worry about getting refinanced or reposed.
