We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Glorious Abhor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Glorious below.
Hi Glorious, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We’ve been working on an album called “Subliminal Tambourine Hypnosis” since the start of 2020. Of course turmoil hit when the pain go ahead when the pandemic started and it’s caused us a lot of setbacks, as plenty of others the world over… that being said, we’re hoping to have it finished by the end of the year and slate a release in the spring of 2023.
Glorious, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So we’re a 4-piece alternative hard rock band hailing from Memphis, TN. Glorious Abhor started off as this idea I had in 2007 where I just wanted to do a fun party rock band that talked about topics like couch-surfing and just not take itself too seriously but the first real song I wrote that intended as the “single” on our EP, “Starscream” was actually something with a deeper meaning, disguised as party rock… that’s kinda been the summation ever since.
A lot of the early years were just us as a 2-piece playing half-assed written songs not fully formed yet, due largely in part to my ADHD now I realize it’s difficult to attempt to write something specific, or even conceptually, which is what I aspire towards but the execution is completely different almost always. I have discovered recently though how to sort of hone in on those attributes and try and make the most of it as best I can. Essentially this is ADD music, very spastic, lots of changes and semi-intricate parts to keeps one’s attention span focused and interested, namely me, and I know there’s plenty of others out there who share the same respect, so that’s target demographic I suppose. That’s not to alienate anyone though, it’s meant to be enjoyed by anyone who dares to think about music in a non-linear way and even with the new album, there’s even some pop sensibilities woven in with the progressive elements as well. I love pop music just as much as I do rock n’ roll or anything else really. I believe the initial idea was that I wanted a place where “anything goes” musically so long as it speaks to me in a sentimental way and because music and art shouldn’t be pigeonholed or compartmentalized so dutifully and diligently.
If that means that my art is less commercially appealing and it perhaps reaches less people, so be it. Yes, of course you want to branch out as much as possible and reach your audience to share your expressions with everyone but the lesson I’ve learned is that if you want something bad enough, there’s no amount of roadblocks that can stand in your way. Or make your own way and eventually, just maybe, people will catch up with you instead.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This new album will be a prime example of resilience really. Our EP was released in 2016 if I remember correctly and here it is the end of 2022 and we officially started work on it two years ago. It’s strange to think that if it’s released in 2023 that’s 7 years between our first release, which is nuts…. that’s pushing “Chinese Democracy” territory, or TOOL for that matter. I didn’t want to wait this long but life happens and thus album will get released if it kills me. Then if I survive this there will be another very shortly afterwards because it’s not like the writing stops during the recording process, I have two or 3 albums worth of material already to go and possibly a book of poetry that will come out as well.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The “business” is ever-changing and evolving. On one hand it’s much easier nowadays to release your art into the world, on any platform, and people can hear, see, read it and you can build a modest following, but you flipside of that coin is that now you’re cognizant there’s millions of others doing the same thing as you. So while the spoils of progression and creations are advancing so is the pool of availability widening. You have to find ways to get out in front of people and push your art if you wish to go for the gusto or just be happy creating in a way that implores contentment in your soul.
