We were lucky to catch up with Gloria Newsome-Brickhouse recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gloria, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Gloria Newsome-Brickhouse, I have served at the Assistant to the Pastor at the Historic Baptist Church for 21 years and as the Associate Pastor for Evangelism, Missions and Outreach.
My work responsibilities are to reach people who are struggling with the frantic issues of life; especially women. My passion is loving, caring and reaching women from all walks of life. That’s why I believe my ministry “Womn of Wisdom at War” WOWW is so relevant to who I am and what I do .
WOWW was birthed while I was in Seminary. My mission through WOWW.is to encourage and help women . I believe Women are at War reclaiming their families, health and Spirituality through the Word of God..
Being a mother, grandmother and Great grandmother, fmily.is extremely portent to me. Today I see and is deeply sorrowful for the deterioration of the family structure. Parenting skills are missing in many families and children are left to care for themselves.
Therefore, it is my heart’s desire to reach , teach and minister to women as an effort to reclaim our families, it literally starts with mother in the home, because we are nutures.
Being an Advocate for Women. Who have health issues touches me deeply, because I am a 13 year survivor of breast cancer, and an 4 year survivor of congested heart failure. I I have been blessed to be an Ambassador for the American Cancer Society which has given me the opportunity to be a breast cancer buddy to many women and to share my Story.
The word cancer and for women many years has been a death sentence. Today,”s Healthcare Providers have the ability to treat cancers and especially breast cancer differently and the survivor rate for many is much lower.
Teaching women from my own personal experience for many women rekindle their faith and they learn to live their lives to the fullest without fear of death.
In the pass I have been a heart patient buddy to those who’s has a pacemaker, with my first patient being my Mother. I want women to know the importance of following their physicians instructions and how important it is to take your medications and keep you appointments with your Primary Care Physician and Cardiologist. Know how women have to take care for family and self, as well as to be for many the only provider can be very difficult and even stressful.
Once again WOWW reaches out to encourage and teach women the importance of reclaiming their heath and being an advocate for their own Healthcare.
Last but not least, I believe women have lost their spirituality, because of the lack of time they spend with God in His Word. You see as a Pastor and as a woman I make no apologies for my overwhelming desire to help women understand that we need to feed our spiritual self.
Our mothers. Grandmother’s and other female family members taught us the importance of staying connected to God. We must remember that this doesn’t mean we will not experience family, and health issues, but it will help us to have hope in our what seems to be hopless situations on life.
Women of Wisdom at War as has had 7 Women’s Conferences focusing on these issues. and 2 events where we just celebrate who we are and one another. WOWW also want women to know how, beautiful, smart, talented and special they are and how to balance this lives.
It is my desire that in the near future I will be able to acquire a grant that will allow WOWW to do greater works.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey as a female clergy in ministry has taught me the importance of always striving to do my best and God will do the rest. I am a survivor and thrives to live my life in such a way that my life gives a testimony to my sisters and brothers that you can succeed with God on your side.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
In my profession I learned the importance of what it means to be inclusive, because there were times I was excluded because of my gender or race.
I had to unlearn being fearful and having a low self esteem. Being brought up in a broken home where domestic violence was always presence, I had to unlearn the thought that I always had to defend myself and to learn I am special.
