We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gloria Geer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gloria below.
Alright, Gloria thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When I completed the training, certifications, and licenses I would need to practice my profession, I realized that I didn’t know how to attract clients to my business. The first thing I decided to do was to establish an online presence, so I created a website. The I joined a local group of alternative health practitioners that met once a month. We would network and share ideas about how to advertise our services. That’s where I learned that having a YELP business page would be an excellent way to inform potential clients of what I did, and they could read reviews from my existing clients.
In addition, I located online magazines that presented information about different types of alternative therapies. I wrote and submitted articles about the many ways that Craniosacral Therapy helps a wide assortment of health conditions. Potential clients were able to read more on my website and read my reviews on YELP. Within a year I had as many clients as I could handle. As time passed, my established clients referred their acquantences to me, and my business grew to the point that I had to turn down new clients.
I contacted the massage school that I had attended to become licensed, and convinced them to hire me to teach Craniosacral Therapy. After a couple of years teaching there, I contacted a local community college about teaching self-help techniques, and they hired me to teach nights and weekends through their adult school programs. In short, I tried every avenue I could think of to present my work to the public.
Gloria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After recovering from cancer surgery, I decided to appreciate and value my life with greater passion than I had felt before I was diagnosed with cancer. That led me to find a profession that I could be passionate about. I decided to attend massage school, where I learned about alternative health methods and heard about Craniosacral Therapy. It really resonated with me because it’s a light-touch form of manual techniques that relax and balance the central nervous system and help a wide variety of health conditions, from headaches and migraines, to orthopedic problems and PTSD. After getting my massage license I sought out training in Craniosacral Therapy with the prestigious Upledger Institute.
I am most proud of the fact that I earned both Techniques and Diplomate level certifications there, and joined their staff as a Teaching Assistant, a Presenter of self-help workshops, and a Certification Examiner for others seeking to become certified therapists. I have taught Craniosacral Therapy to parents and caregivers, massage and bodywork professionals, and medical professionals. Of course this didn’t happen overnight, it was a long and very satisfying journey.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I feel that, for me, pursuing the career I chose was the best decision for my life. I found a way to help others relieve both physical and emotional pain, and at the same time, I met people from all walks of life that I never would have met otherwise. I established a circle of lasting friendships with my colleagues and clients that has given my life deep meaning.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
What was most helpful in succeeding in my profession was my love of people. People can tell when you are genuinely interested in and supportive if them. I answer phone inquiries promptly, I patiently explain to potential clients how what I do can help them, and I make follow-up calls and texts to make sure that my clients are happy with the services I provided them. If they aren’t completely happy, I offer a free follow-up session. If a potential clients needs a specialist in my field, such as someone that specializes in pediatric care, I happily give them a referral. I make sure my clients know that their satisfaction is my priority.
