We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Glenn Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Glenn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
A few years ago, we had a customer come to us with a prosthetic leg. It belonged to her uncle who had passed away. She wanted us to create a lamp that she could give to her mother to commemorate her uncle. We love a good challenge, so we were happy to create a unique piece that would let his light shine on. We finished a live edge wood disk for the base and mounted the leg to it. We used our years of experience and knowledge from completing other custom projects to route the wiring and transform it into a lamp. It turned out even better than we had envisioned. We like to compare it to the leg lamp from the Christmas Story.
Glenn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We started Whiskertin back in 2015. My friend Aaron came to me with an idea to create a lamp from a scrap piece of spiral ductwork because he knew that I had experience making and restoring lamps. Ductwork normally used for heating and air conditioning, but we drill some holes in it and wired it to become a pendant light. We hung it in his living room, snapped a few photos, posted it on social media, and got a pretty good response. We didn’t intend to start a business when we made that first light, but it led to so many more creations. We specialize custom pieces that are truly one of a kind. You can bring us an idea and will make it a reality.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
We like to have fun while we are creating. We have one giant workbench, so we can all be a part of each lamp. This allows us brainstorm to throw ideas out to make sure that we get the best possible result for the project at hand.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
We do a lot of maker and art vendor events. This allows us to meet one on one with new and existing customers. We definitely stand out at every event that we attend. If you are going to be a bear, be a grizzly! We also post behind the scene footage on our story and photos of new creations social media. Another way we keep in touch is our showroom. It is located at 1145 Getz St, #306 on the south side of downtown Akron. We are open from 11 to 4 on Saturdays or by appointment. This allows us to meet and discuss projects in person. That is the best way to make sure we are both on the same page and can make the custom piece of your dreams.
