We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Glenda Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Glenda, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
So, my parents have had a huge impact on my life and my art. They have taught me a lot about perseverance, which has been crucial in helping me achieve my goals. My father is the logical and analytical type, and he taught me the importance of planning and setting goals. However, I think having too much structure can stifle creativity, and that’s where my mother comes in. She’s creative and intuitive, and has taught me to trust my instincts and intuition.
I spent the first half of my life with my father and stepmother, and the second half with my mother and stepfather. Working with my mother at the family restaurant taught me a lot about entrepreneurship and work-life balance. My mother worked really hard, but we still made time to go to the Buddhist temple on Sundays, something I still do with my daughter. Learning about Buddhism and meditation from my mother has been one of the most valuable gifts I have ever received. It has helped me heal from past traumas and trust my inner being.
All of these teachings have helped me grow as an artist. When I paint, it comes from my inner being, and my meditation practice has allowed me to reach a deep meditative state, which has been perfected over years of practice. Looking back at my previous art, I can see how much I’ve grown, and I owe that to the combined teachings of my parents.
Glenda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey there! I’m a painter, specializing in abstract expressionism. I’ve actually been painting since I was just 6 years old! It’s always been my dream to become an artist because I just love creating things and using my hands.
Recently, I’ve been working on some new projects besides just painting. I’ve created a new collection of art, and even started a skincare line that’s suitable for both men and women. I’m also in the process of creating a clothing line!
Abstract art is my thing, because I never really know what I’m going to end up creating. My life experiences really inspire my work. Sometimes, I even find myself crying while I’m painting because it can be such a powerful experience. Other times, I just get lost in thought while I work.
I’m really proud of the way my art is evolving, as well as my new skincare line. As an artist, I like to keep my creative juices flowing by working on multiple projects at once. It keeps things interesting and helps me explore different aspects of my creativity.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As an artist and a mother, my biggest motivation is creating a legacy for my daughter. I believe in leaving behind a solid foundation of generational wealth that will provide her with the financial freedom to pursue her dreams. She’s passionate about becoming a pediatrician, and I want to make sure she has all the resources she needs to achieve her goals.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Have you ever thought about trusting the journey of an artist and embracing the unknown? Personally, I used to try to control every aspect of my journey as an artist, but I quickly realized that even the best laid plans can go awry. It wasn’t until I learned to let go and take things day by day that my life became less hectic and overwhelming. At the end of the day, we’re the masters of our own dreams, and we have the power to create the life we want.
