We were lucky to catch up with Glen Masker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Glen, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
This business is the non-profit side of the Scuba School called Water therapy. Being a vietnam veteran, and associated with many veterans, we bergan to support another non profit organization called lifewaters. this included specialized training to deal with PTSD, amputees, paraplegics and even quadriplegics. In order to obtain local funding, we incorporated in a 501c3 last january. We decided to promote water therapy for PTSD for not only veterans, but medical, firefighters, and lawenforcement.
Glen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I joined the USCG during the Vietnam war and began a journey into the underwater world. This began with USCG duties that included recovering drowning victims, and bodies in sunken craft. after my service, i began to recreationally scuba dive and found that the experience had profound affect on my inner peace. For many years I have taught recreational scuba divers, and have collected staff that are like minded to share this underwater experience. We have several veterans on staff. twice a year we take handicapped veterans to the Georgia aquarium for a underwater experience diving with large animals. This gives them an experience not likely to be experienced in the open water…
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During COVID, when clients were not coming in the store, we had to transition to doing learning and academics on line. in addition, we had to learn extraordinarily procedures to make sure all the training equipment was sanitized between uses
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
initial capital was via my own 401K and then credit cards, and eventually was able to et a low interest loan from a SBA lender
