Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Gizem Atalay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Gizem thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My journey into motion design has been a mix of formal education and self-directed learning. And let me tell you, in this field, you’ve gotta keep learning because technology never stands still! In hindsight, seeking out mentorship earlier could have been beneficial. Nonetheless, I’ve found that understanding design principles and mastering software tools like Adobe After Effects are essential for success in this field.
Challenges have been part of the journey, from battling self-doubt to navigating the vast amount of information available. But each obstacle has made me stronger and more resilient as a designer.
Overall, I’m grateful for every step of the journey and excited for what lies ahead!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a motion designer with a lifelong love for art. From doodling as a kid to diving headfirst into animation, I’ve always been drawn to creative expression.
Leaving Turkey at 17 to chase my dreams was a bold move, but it led me to where I am today—a versatile motion designer skilled in 2D and 3D animation, design and photography.
What sets me apart? It’s my passion for storytelling and evoking emotions through my work. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited to keep pushing the envelope in the world of motion design.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that success in my career was solely dependent on working long hours and sacrificing personal time. The backstory to this lesson lies in my early days as a motion designer, where I was so passionate about my work that I often found myself pulling late nights and weekends to meet deadlines and perfect my projects.
However, over time, I realized that this approach was not sustainable. It took a toll on my physical and mental well-being, leading to burnout and diminishing creativity. I had to unlearn the idea that busyness equated to productivity and success.
Instead, I learned the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. I discovered that taking breaks, spending time with loved ones, and pursuing hobbies outside of work actually fueled my creativity and improved my overall performance.
It was a gradual process of shifting my mindset and redefining what success meant to me. Today, I prioritize balance and well-being in both my personal and professional life, knowing that true success lies in finding harmony between the two.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is all about blending passion with purpose. Each project is like a thrilling adventure, where I get to explore new ideas and create experiences that truly resonate with people.
I use storytelling to connect with audiences, spark emotions, and leave a lasting impact. It’s about crafting moments that inspire and empower, making the world a little brighter, one frame at a time.
