We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Giuliano Mingucci. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Giuliano below.
Giuliano, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I ever worked on was a project backed by a non-profit organization called Unbound. Unbound is a sponsorship and scholarship based organization that connects those who have much, with those who have very little financial wealth. A friend/colleague of mine and I went to Madagascar for a month, where we were tasked with recording original music written and performed by the people sponsored through this organization. The original goal was to record/mix/release an album of these original songs, but in addition to that task we also collected a massive amount of photos and videos from the experience. In the end, we recorded over 50 original songs, which we narrowed down to a dozen that were mixed, mastered and released as a full length album. In addition to the album, we also curated a multi-media gallery event which included several large-scale prints of the photos we took and coupled video clips that would tell the stories behind the images you were seeing, paired with the music that was recorded, to engulf the viewer in a multi-sensory experience that would give a deep sense of the energy and creativity of the people from Madagascar.
Giuliano, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a live event production specialist, focusing primarily on corporate and major sporting events. I have over 15 years of experience in live and recorded production and am at home in both audio and video work. I’m a native of São Paulo, Brazil and am fully bilingual in English and Portuguese, with a functional use of Spanish, and this facilitates my work internationally.
I’m a diverse multimedia specialist, and I regularly guide clients through the creative process to help convey their message to audiences of all sizes, both in-person and virtually. I love leading teams of creative professionals to help execute content that is specific for every presentation environment. With a focus on customer service and client interaction, I bring a unique, friendly, and professional approach and an eye for detail to every event.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in audio engineering. From there, I went to work in audio recording and television studios, and thrived in live production roles. Some of my career highlights include recording indigenous music in Madagascar, technical direction for the NFL in Mexico and for the Super Bowl, numerous production roles for Major League Baseball, video direction for the PanAmerican Games in Peru and Chile, shooting documentary video of folk music in Portugal, managing virtual events for Broadway Unlocked and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and extensive work on corporate events with clients such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Bosch, Cerner, Boston Scientific and others.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Because I work primarily in live events, it should come as no surprise that I had to make a huge pivot in my career when the Covid 19 pandemic happened. In the course of less than one week I went from having a full event calendar to losing literally all of my work. My wife also works in the live event industry, so it was a terrifying prospect to be immediately faced with zero income for me and my family. We had a couple months worth of savings on hand, and the PPP loans did help us make it through an incredibly uncertain time, but I couldn’t sit at home and do nothing. I was able to quickly see where things were headed and I took the opportunity to learn everything I possibly could about live streaming. I found clients that were looking to live stream events they had previously held in person, and within a few months my work schedule was filled with technical and artistic direction of live-streamed events. So, I was able to learn a whole new skillset that coincided well with my previous knowledge-base, and gain experience I could build on and carry forward once in-person live events returned to the norm.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
While I understand that this is not the most effective strategy for many people/businesses, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been word of mouth. While I do maintain a website, LinkedIn and a social media presence, none of that comes close to what I’ve been able to achieve based solely on other peoples’ recommendations. I’m lucky that I get to work with diverse teams of creative and technical professionals all over the world. I deeply value getting to know other smart, talented people in my field and I work hard to foster relationships with as many of those people as possible. I genuinely want all of those people to be successful and find opportunities that help them and their businesses prosper. The combination of that type of relationship building, my communication style, and work ethic lead to my colleagues recommending me to their clients and other business professionals. Thus the chain of networking and opportunity continues to grow.
